2018 Dear Me Contest 392 Words
Dear Me:

2017 was a year of change, disappointment and loss. I know you have been spinning your wheels needlessly, trying to be Superwoman and it left you depleted, tired and unappreciated. You did not set any goals because, quite frankly, you weren’t going to achieve them anyway.

So, for 2018, let’s do some practical and fun things this year. You should teach your daughters to become more independent. You do way too much for them. First things first: show them how a clean house is supposed to look by doing some long overdue decluttering. Then, teach them how them how to prepare meals, do laundry, change a flat tire, and how to manage money. You want them to be able to take care of themselves when they become adults, don’t you?

Also, you need to have more of a social life; go other places besides work and church. You have friends; make time to hang out with them. You’re getting older; remember, life is short. Spend more time with your parents, reconnect with your brother and your cousins. Try to keep a peaceful relationship with your sister. Reach out to your nieces and sister in law; they barely know you.

Lastly, please sharpen your writing skills. You have a gift that you’ve kept hidden. That’s what you’ve always been: a writer. For whatever reason, you’ve been afraid to acknowledge it. Maybe it’s because you thought no one wants to hear what you have to say or maybe it was that one critical English teacher from your school days who never had anything positive to say about your essays and other writings. There were other instructors who enjoyed reading your papers aloud to their classes and encouraged you to keep writing; yet, you allowed that one teacher to intimidate you. For the longest time, you've felt unfulfilled. You found Writing.com and we’re so happy you did. With encouragement and constructive criticism from the writers there, you can share that creative part of you with the world fearlessly as you strive to improve. Polish those novellas you’ve been working on for years. Work towards getting something published this year.

If you don’t get all these done in a year’s time, don’t stress. Carry them over to the next year. Just believe and keep on writing. Hey, we’ve got this!

Love,

Me
