A brief encounter of two strangers. |
The Hitchhiker Luke's first experience Luke's body seemed to take over when he saw his arm outstretched and his thumb raised. The car slowed to a stop and Luke could see this traveler was tired. Luke's heart began to beat faster as he approached. With only a backpack and a small duffle bag this stranger got in. He closed the door and looked Luke in the eyes for a long time. "Hi, I'm heading to the boarder," he said. "I'm crossing over to Vancouver if you're going that way," Luke said. "Sure," he said as he got in the car. It occurred to Luke that he should get his name. The minutes passed and the sound of the wheels rolling down the interstate was maddening. Neither of them seemed to want to break the silence that hung in the air. The radio in Luke's car stopped working three years ago. Fear rose in his stomach and overflowed; he had to catch his breath. If he spoke it would only spill out in some useless chatter. No one wants chatter, even if there was nothing to say. "Brian," he said with his hand waiting for Luke to take hold of it. "I'm Luke," Luke said as their hands met. After shaking Luke's hand Brian fixed his eyes outside the window. All you could see were trees and bushes. But if you looked at the edge of the road you could see the places where they had cleared the shrubs. Brian's eyes remained fixed out the window. Then finally he looked straight ahead. Luke could smell Brian and it must have been something he was wearing. It was intoxicating and it made Luke hard. But Luke could tell he was a day or two from a shower. His face was serene. His eyes were brown and his hair was long and black. All Luke could think about was running his fingers through it. All the ways he could delay the trip; Luke thought of while he was driving. He wanted to delay just to take in the passion in Brian's eyes. "You know if we don't make it to the border by sundown we could find a place to stay the night," Brian said. He said it with so much indifference that Luke could feel a twinge of panic in his gut. "Well, I don't think we'll make it," Luke said. He thought about the proposition and his mind began to turn and settle again on Brian's long hair. Luke wondered if Brian knew what it would mean for them to find a place for the night. He hoped that it would mean a night spent in each other's arms. Luke could feel Brian's heartbeat already. After an hour of driving and not much talking Luke found an exit to a motel. Luke could barely contain his emotions. He was sitting next to someone he found on the side of the road. He knew he wanted to sleep with Brian. He hoped Brian felt the same way. If the night didn't go as Luke thought, he would still find it overwhelming to sleep next to him. The motel was old and pale although it still looked neat. There were a few cars parked in front of the building. As the two of them reached the entrance Brian held the door for Luke. The front desk was small and behind it was a board with keys. The man at the front was old. His hair was gray and his face looked at the two men here with stern fascination. Luke could already imagine what he must be thinking. But they paid for the night and Luke took the key. With the watching eyes of the desk man, they took a room with one bed. All Brian had to say about the single bed was that it would be cheaper. They made their way to the room which was on the upper level of the motel. When they got inside they found the usual motel setting, right down to the free coffee and extra towels. The bed was made and the carpet was clean. Brian went straight for the shower. Luke had already taken a shower in the morning. But the way Brian looked at Luke made his stomach twirl. All Luke could think of was how Brian would undress and stand naked under the running water. Luke would now give anything to see Brian naked. He would have masturbated if it wasn't for the hope that something might take place tonight. Luke could hear Brian turn off the shower. Then Brian was out and on the bed next to Luke. He was wearing only a t-shirt and shorts. He got himself under the covers and laid out flat on his back. Luke could smell the scent he was using and it was very clear what it was; some type of aftershave, probably brute. "You can get under the covers with me Luke," Brian said. Luke was shaking a little as he pulled back the covers. Then he lay down on the bed. Brian turned and looked at Luke. He looked for a long time. This should have been enough to calm Luke's worry but it didn't. "You're shaking Luke; we don't have to do this you know," Brian said. "I didn't know we were doing anything," Luke said. "Don't pretend we didn't get this room for a reason Luke," All it took for Luke to find comfort in his new friend was the touch of Brian's hand on his chest. They slowly undressed and kissed each other and explored each other's bodies. Finally, Brian had Luke pinned down as he told Luke to turn around. Luke was face down and Brian knew the moves. Brian kissed Luke slowly up his back. He kissed Luke on the neck as he slowly made love to him. When it was over Luke was in Brain's arms. And Brian had lit a cigarette. The smoke filled the room. But if the smoke bothered Luke he didn't show it. He was more than content lying in Brain's arms. He could feel Brian's heartbeat slow and his chest rising and falling and he fell asleep in his arms. When Luke awoke it was to find that Brian had left. Luke checked the room and Brian's backpack and duffle bag were gone. He hated the thought but checked for his wallet. The wallet was there but Luke thought he should have known better than to fall for a passing drifter. The End |
