A demoness has been the badass of Hell for ten thousand years. Nothing's changed until.... |
Chapter 1: The Nightmare It's dark, and I am falling. I don't understand. Why am I falling? I just keep falling and falling and falling. The darkness just never ends. My heart is practically jumping out of my chest. My arms are flailing. Searching. Trying to find something, anything to grab onto. Then there is a light. It is not a white and beautiful light. No, it is a crimson red that is dull and dark and menacing. As I continue to fall and fall and fall, the light gets stronger, deeper, scarier. All of a sudden there is a silver gleam among the light. Then another, and another, and another. "What are they?" Then I see what I am falling towards. There is dark red fire everywhere, and long, sharp spikes jutting out of the flames. I scream as I fall closer and closer to the horrid death pit. It starts to get hot. So hot that it feels like my skin is melting. So hot that my blood is boiling. I continue to scream and flail while I fall closer and closer. The tears streaking down my face are evaporating quickly and burning my skin. As I near the tips of those sharp, silver spears, I only have one thought: "So this is Hell." Just as I hit the flaming spikes I feel my soul jump. Then I wake up. I am sweating. I feel the welts all over my naked body. My girlfriend is rubbing my shoulders and mumbling incoherent soothers. Her face is a perfect picture of beauty and horror. My breathing is heavy. My body aches. Lilly is holding my face and wiping away my tears. "Everything hurts," I sob. She pulls me close, our cloth less bodies cuddled, "Shh, shh. It's okay. It was only a nightmare." She pulls away and begins examining my bare chest. I had apparently been ripping at the skin there. Then she sees the welts. There are bright splotches everywhere. Lilly begins poking at them and each time I yowl in agony. She looks up at me, full of concern. But I am not looking at her. I am staring in terror at the demon of death standing at the foot of our bed. It smiles, and I let out a blood curdling scream. Chapter 2: Just Another Day in Hell . I wake up, but I do so calmly. I open my eyes slowly. There is complete darkness. I am not concerned because this is what happens every time I sleep. I dream the memory of the last moments of my life before the reaper takes me to hell. Everyone always dreams their last moments. It's one of the things that comes with being a demon. No one chooses this path though. I surely didn't. I outstretch my bat-like wings that I use as a cover and look at the scene around me. A dark corridor lies in front of me. This happens often when I awake. It means that I need to go to the assignment hall. You see, down here in Hell, nothing ever stays the same. Everything is always changing. When I don't have the corridor, I have the Death demon sleeping quarters, which means my assignment list isn't finished, or I haven't been given another one. Hanging upside down, I twist and turn to pop the bad disks in my back. The upside of being dead is that you don't feel pain and are much stronger, wiser, and lack mostly anything that would make you human. The downside though, is that when you're sent to hell, you still have every bodily injury you died with, and they never go away. I have a bad back and my signature red splotches on my body from the terrifying dream I had before I was taken and turned into a demon. Everyone that goes to hell is turned into a demon of some sort; I was turned into a Death demon. Occasionally, I may have time in-between assignments and get to hang around the Dead Zone. The Dead Zone is where all of the new souls come through, and are guided by Watch demons. That's basically the only free time that demons get. If you're lucky, you might see someone who you knew back when you were alive. I have no one though. My girlfriend had died over ten thousand years ago, my parents shortly before that; all of them went heaven. Everyone knows me as the badass Death demon that is buddie-buddie with Lilith herself (which I am). I get more time off than anybody but I don't usually spend it in Hell. I go to the physical realm and just watch, occasionally messing with a random human. In fact, today I will be going, but this time it'll be for work. I detangle my legs from around the poll that I hang from to sleep and begin walking down the dark hall, my hair falling into its usual messy, black fluff. I know I look the same as I did yesterday, and the day before that, and the day before that. Everything changes, except for me. "Just another day in Hell," I said as I started to see the red light leading to the assignment hall. Chapter 3: Assignment I walk into the large room that is the assignment hall. The light that garnished the room was like the light of the moon on a stormy night. Along the wall opposite of the doorway I had just walked into were four receptionists desks. Behind the desk areas I can see demons working through informational papers while the All Mother of our kind barks orders. The reception desks on the far sides both have doors off to the side to allow easy exit, as these are the ones that you got assignments from. The two desk in the middle are where you get new ones. I go to the mostly empty line of the left desk and the three demons in front of me move to either side to allow me to go first. The demoness at the dark oak table looks up at me with a smile while straitening up a stack of papers and stapling them. "Hello Avi," she says with devilish grin, "Back so soon?" "How about you get me a longer list this time, I'm starting to get bored again," I say tossing my black frizz behind my shoulders. "Okey dokey," she says and turns her rolley chair around to yell at no one in particular, "We got an Avi Monday!" As soon as she says my name the Queen of the Damned swirls around and a smile spreads across her face. "Avriel! How pleasant to see you," Lilith says with her sultry voice as she walks towards the desk. |
