A mother's grief ... (Form: Free Verse) A Writer's Cramp Winner
Manchester

You expected to be sad in the fall.

She was off to university …
How had she grown so fast?
A flower preparing to blossom,
to show her beauty and gentleness
in a world full of possibilities.
I can still feel her little hand
         forever holding mine.

This! This was beyond sadness.
Only a primal scream could express
         the loss,
                   the heartbreak,
                             the pain.

Her last words left in a voicemail: ...
”Mum, I’m safely at the concert.
         Laughter. You worry too much!”
... never to be erased.

Anger does not sooth the hurt.
Time will not heal the heart’s wound.
There is no understanding …
         only mindless darkness.
