Icarus Staring at the sun too long A sun that isn't mine I try to run, the pulls too strong The tides confuse the lines Lines drawn in sand every night That waves just wash away and every morning at first light The sky is where you stay Hanging, taunting, out of reach Shining evermore With lines erased along the beach An ever changing shore Even when you're out of sight Eclipsed, the other side The moon reflects, the mind delights In darkness, stars reside But even they can't burn as bright Bleached ivory bone moon A gleaming glowing satellite To which the hearts in tune Waning as it runs its phase A crescent in the sky To wax rhapsodic in the rays Wings soften as we fly As feathers rend in direct heat Long sealed wax is spent Like Icarus we fall replete To shorelines we resent Shorelines where our best laid plans Get redrawn every night Washed away in tidal spans and memories of flight Alas, there is no other sun Just shadows cast in lines Memories where waves have run and rewrote over time Editions long, for dull grey moths Addicted to the light Desiring a life less goth Unbound from endless flight Flying for a sun too long A sun that isn't mine For now I fly, the suns too strong … and dull things long to shine |
