The Great Bike Experience

One day my daughter said to me,
“We sit too much and watch tv,
Let’s all get bikes, it would be fun,
To ride around with everyone.”
I agreed, but then thought, “Wow,
It’s been so long; do I know how?

It didn’t matter, off we went,
To Walmart for the big event,
Myself, my daughter, plus two more,
Excited as we hit the store.

Which one to get, should it be blue?
No, yellow is the one for you.
This one I think will do just fine.
And over there, that one is mine.

Out we went, the bikes in hand,
So smug about our little plan.
Each day we’d meet and take a ride,
We stood there, bikes right by our side.

The car was just way to small,
However, would we get them all,
Transported home, now what to do?
We didn’t think this project through.

We watched the first one drive away,
The three of us just had to stay
And guard our bikes till she returned,
We laughed and said, “Lesson learned.”

Soon car retuned to get one more,
She pulled in front of Walmart’s door,
So one by one, we all got home,
Four bikes stood proud, all glistening chrome.

First sunny day we all went out,
We left the yard with victory shout,
All in a line like a parade,
Behind us was the cooling shade.

Ten minutes out there comes a hill,
And all but one lone bike stood still,
For none could make it up that climb,
So out of shape; it was a crime.

Off we got and pushed them there,
Then reached the top, where was a chair?
Our legs were shaky, hearts beat strong,
The laughter, mirth, and fun were gone.

It was the end of biking trips,
No sounds of glee came from our lips.
Sometimes we take a ride or two,
But they have dwindled to a few.

The bikes sit lonely in the shed,
And tv has resumed instead.
Their fate might lie in some great sale,
And I’ll ignore my bathroom scale.
