Short story with a cliffhanger. |
It was cold. I could tell because my fingers were numb. The sharp shadows seeped into my bones, and there was no light around me. Sometimes there were voices. I could hear them, whispering to me, asking and begging me to save them. Sometimes I could see things. They weren't there long, just a flash, but I knew they were there. Ugly creatures who captures souls. I was sure of it. For my whole life have been alone, at least it felt like no one was ever there for me. My mom passed away in a car crash, and my dad left me when I was three. Now here I am, 13 years later, alone as always. Something was breathing on my neck, cold but gentle. It wasn't frightening, but surprisingly soothing. It felt safer away from home. I was determined not to look back again, although deep down inside, I secretly missed my home and family. Evening slowly turned into pitch black as the clock ticked. Shortly after dark, I realized I was being followed. The person, no, thing, wasn't going away anytime soon. I paced quicker and hoped that all of this was just a nightmare. My footsteps became rapid and fast, and so did my heartbeats. Suddenly, something made me stop. I called out softly, not knowing what could be around me. Everything was quiet and peaceful all of a sudden. I reached out, my hands trying to feel for something solid. But there was nothing. Not even one light to guide me. The whispers came, creepily. All of them whispering different things at once and none of them I could understand. They were trying to confuse me. Yet there was one that was special and stood out. I still could not realize what it was telling me, but it grew louder. I stood very still, like a statue. The whisper turned into a high-pitched cry. I waited to see what was coming for me. Everything went black and I passed out. Next thing I knew, I was back in my small, blue, full-sized bed with my loose PJs on. In the same room where I used to play around with robots and have a great time in. But the most important thing is, I am back home! "Daniel, come down for dinner!" A familiar male voice called. Right at that moment, my heart warmed up and I felt like I belonged. "Dad?" My lips quivered with excitement, yet there was no answer. I didn't care. I was finally home. I dashed downstairs with happiness and saw nothing but another spine-tingling shocker: There was another me. In the same seat I usually sat in. |
