Four Facets Framed
A feral tongue
licks and gorges itself
as it rips through
Innocent towers
Of tall Pines and Birch
Black smoke plumes
and blocks out the sun
Turning high noon
into midnight black.
Flickering gold
rises up into the cool night air
Blue and orange
Dance and frolic with it in delight
As sparks carry off on a breeze.
Logs char and ready themselves
For roasting marshmallows
And hot dogs
Oh, how I love
These camper's delights. treats?
Logs pressed in firm
Down into the fevered glow
Raising the temperature
Heating the room
Warming the water
And baking the bread
All while, bacon and eggs
sizzle in the frying pan
That rests on the black surface.
This stove serves many purposes
Each very important.
Kerosene lamp lights the room
Casting a warm glow over the place
Shadows dance on the wall
And I laugh as I add
My own finger shapes
Night has settled outside
Nature kept at bay
As the lamp's glow flanks the darkness
And holds it back.
