A Sniper's Lament

(This is a prayer that I wrote for a post-apocalyptic novel I'm currrently co-writing.)


Mother,
         May I walk in your grace.
         Keep watch over me,
                   As I watch over the chosen.

         Ensure my aim is true,
         My hand steady,
                   As I vanquish your enemy.

         Await the fallen
         With open arms,
                   A forgiving heart.

         Know that your justice
         Has been carried out
                   with swiftness and honor.

Mother,
         Await my soul’s return,
         When your work is done.
