Chapter 37: The second power source is activated



Jane was in the basement lab getting things ready. She had the TV on and had watched the MEGADOM service. She had watched in awe as Mega Woman, who was SOOOOOO much larger in person than on TV, got even bigger and, she assumed, more powerful.

However, it wasn’t so much what she saw that had worried her but, instead, the words that were ringing in her ear. Mega Woman telling her she was better than this. Jane knew she was right. Others had told her this over the years she had worked for Mr. Byrons. She didn’t know why she stayed. She guessed she couldn’t do any better and based on her life and what others had said for years, she felt she was right.

Jane walked over to the computer and typed in the codes. She heard the elevator ding and out came Mr. Byrons.

“That bloated cow,” he said as he held the gem in his hand and walked towards the containment pod. “You see what just happened?” he asked Jane.

“Yes sir, I, I did. Pretty remarkable,” she added.

“Oh shut up. Why do I ask your opinion?” he asked as he shoved past her and placed the gem in the containment pod. A hissing sound was heard as a clear door came down over the gem and it was cooled with super cool gas. Lance typed in a few more codes which allowed three laser devices on the top, bottom and left of the gem to extend. He hit a few more buttons and a hum began as the lasers warmed up.

“Jane this is going to be dangerous. Since I don’t know the words to activate the powers contained in this, I am having to guess as the frequency in which it operates. It might be lethal. If it is, and if I do die you will need to proceed as we planned. Use the gloves to take out the gem. It will be super cooled so you can smash it on the ground. Afterwards hit the destruct button and leave and never come back here. I have placed some money in an account for you that will activate if my vital signs stop,” he commanded.

“Yes sir,” she said as she went over to the large touch screen attached to the other tubes and wires which were attached to the containment pod of the gem. “It is ready sir,” she said.

Lance smiled as he removed his shirt, shoes and pants. He was ready. If he was right, this gem would give him powers like Mega Woman. Who knows, maybe he would even be STRONGER than Mega Woman! He went over and laid down on the metal bed.

“Strap me in Jane,” he said as she came over and pulled the thick straps over his arms, torso and legs. She next took the large metallic thick tube over the bed and pointed it at his chest.

“Make sure you get that right Jane. The power from the gem will come through that and into me,” he said sternly.

“Yes sir,” she said as she positioned it, thinking it looked more like one of those x-ray arms she saw when she went to the dentist rather than a cutting piece of technology. She walked back over to the touch screen. She was getting ready to hit the INITIATE button and stopped. She turned to her boss.

“You sure about this sir? I mean, you have wealth, power, all the things one wants in life. Do you really need super powers? Is, is this worth your life?” she asked.

“If I wasn’t strapped down I would smack you in the face right now. Just hit the god dammed button Jane. NOW!” he snarled.

Jane turned to the screen. “Yes sir,” she said as she hit INITIATE.

A louder hum was heard as the machine began to activate. The lasers fired into the gem causing it to emit a blinding purple light. The hum became louder as the light got brighter. Jane shielded her eyes from the light and looked over at the metal gun-like object over her boss’s chest. It also began to glow at the tip with a bright purple glow.

“It is working! It is fucking working!” Lance said as he tried to look through the blinding light. Suddenly there was a large BANG as the room shook. The bang knocked Jane out of her chair and on the floor. Another BANG was heard as the humming began to grow and become almost deafening in intensity. A third and final BANG was heard which was three times as loud as the others. The vibration of the machine shook the room again, causing things to fall from shelves and Jane’s chair to move.

“What is going on?” she screamed as she tried to crawl towards the exit. She looked back and saw that the last bang had changed the position of the power gun which had been pointed at her boss. Jane looked over at the touch screen which blinked “OPTIMUM POWER ACHIEVED.” She looked through horrified eyes as the gun swung into final position. It was pointed at her.

“NO!” Lance screamed as the gun activated hitting his mousy assistant in the chest.
