Adam had a wife before Eve. She was terrible and beautiful. Her name was Lilith.
Oh Lilith,
you forgotten thing.
So strong
and full of bravery
and full of passion
and full of darkness.
How did it feel to be pushed from the garden
you helped create?
How did it feel to be hated in the name of
familial love?
Where in the world did you get that courage?
The darkness must have carried you,
like waters coaxing a ship along.
Were you ever afraid of the waves?
Did you ever fear drowning?
It must have ignited the blood in your veins,
like a match to kerosene.
You must have followed the moon,
on her path to hell,
bare feet bloody and raw,
lungs burning like the flames
you descended into.
How did you do it?
How did you make exile
look like a victory?
How did you fall from Grace,
like a tide rising onto shore?
They say you turned you demons
into gleaming horses,
and your anger into a great dark carriage.
They say you went back to that old place,
and whispered in your sister's ear
collapse
collapse
collapse.
They say you led her like a shepherd
leading a lamb to the slaughter
and she ate that pretty pink fruit,
a Persephone of sorts,
making a deal she couldn't understand.
Did you enjoy the sin?
Did the ashes taste sweet on your lips?
Or did you weep for her?
Her innocence, her freedom,
all the blood she would bleed?
Did you forgive her?
Could you ever?
Or did you thank her?
Oh Lilith,
I won't let the world forget.
