free verse, ponderings on peace
Peace can mean a time without war
Yet internally, peace means much more.

I have all my basic needs met:
Food, clothing, home, and yet~
Quickly arises a yearning for purpose
In fact, in my mind is quite a fuss
The inner drive seems stronger than life
Without meaning and worth, the ensuing strife
Drains me and draws me into a pit
Of dense darkness, in which I sit.

I observe others whose minds amaze me
Clearly they share the world they’ve seen;
Opinions and facts about people and places
Their enthusiasm shows through on their faces.
The world they describe is vibrant and full:
Joys, horrors, beauty, and pain. They pull
Me and elicit reactions ~ not observation.
Sitting in stillness, is a battle which is hard to be won.

As I listen to discourses between my friends,
I think, “I am less than them and in the end,
My mind doesn’t hunger for world news
In fact, I care not to listen to political views.
This is important in their estimation,
But what influence do I have on the nation?

My own little corner of daily doings
Is mundane and humble without any bling.

In contrast, their interests are broad, and important, it seems.

If I could, I’d return to a time before this one
Before cable and internet, TMI continually
Perhaps I’d keep up if the news came in more slowly~
As it is, I am suffocated by the helplessness.
