This is the fifth entry of the Gauntlet.
Caitlin had made a decision within the last 24 hours. Despite her parents constant bickering, she decided to start participating in extracurricular activities through school. She had a choice between Class President or Class Treasurer. Or, maybe she would do something more fun - like the Prom Committee. Whatever it was, Caitlin knew it would not ever be enough to impress her mom and dad. Nothing she did was good enough. Participating in these activities would give her respite from the normal every day in-home fighting. Even though the prom was months away, it would be fun to be on the committee. She liked being artistic and creative.

I'll be on the Prom Committee. I think I'll run for Class Treasurer too. How bad can I be, with as much money as Mom and Dad claim we have? Caitlin found where to sign up for the Prom Committee and did so. Afterward, she headed to another location to sign up to run for Class Treasurer. She felt confident in herself and walked away with a smile. Caitlin enjoyed her classes for a change and kept telling herself how great she would be for both extracurricular activities. At last, lunch period arrived and she carried a notebook and pen with her. Finding a table to sit alone at, she made sure to be close to nature. Caitlin began to write down her ideas for both the prom and campaign for Class Treasurer.

There was a time crunch for Caitlin. She had four days to get her name amongst the student population and votes to boot. She was ready for it. This was the first time in years Caitlin had ever been this ready for anything in her life. She was ready for it. This was the first time in years Caitlin had ever been this ready for anything in her life. Well, with the exception of looking forward to moving out someday. She listed points to cover during her campaign.

*Bullet* Balance the class budget.
*Bullet* Keep updated Calendar of Events.
*Bullet* Arrange fund-raisers and keep accurate record of inventory and sales.
*Bullet* Keep attendance record updated.
*Bullet* Ensure proper use of class funds.

It was time to complete the rest of her day, so Caitlin moved on. Over the next four days, she remained busy, holding campaign meetings and speaking to her fellow students. Early Monday morning, the voting began. Caitlin was nervous and hopeful. She prayed to win. It would be nice to feel like she was doing something right for a change. At the end of the day, the winner would be announced. The anticipation clouded her focus throughout it. Finally, there was a crackle over the intercom. The principal, Mr. Matthews, announced that the tallies were in. He announced the winners and her face fell. Caitlin did not win the position of Class Treasurer. She hid her desire to cry with a smile. After school ended, she returned home and locked herself in her room, crying. She worked so hard to win and failed. Maybe my parents are right about me being a failure and worthless. Caitlin berated herself and remained sullen for the rest of her day.
