Some poems just stick in my mind, never as clear as I wish, never as complete as I intend.

Lifeless trees
Devoid of leafs
Skeletons of wood
Casting shadows
Offering a broken view
All reality set askew
Breaking up the mundane
Leaving my mind to say
Is what I see so real
Or it what I see something else
In the distance
Closer and closer yet
There are hounds
Beast bound by a code
Ruthless killers of souls
Masters of death
Barbarians at the gate
Between living and the end
Right now
I can hear them
I can see their fractured shapes
Broken beasts no less terrifying
Creatures devoid of souls
Creatures of true purpose
Unleashed
They are coming for me
They will be here soon
Upon my bones they’ll feast
Discarding my flesh
Refusing my very soul
They’ll scatter me
Both far and wide
I’ll never be found
No one will ever know
That I
A man once so damn alive
Is now very much dead
After they are done
After they have their fill
Of me and my bones
They’ll go back
To whence they came
Back into the lifeless woods
Back into forever’s bosom
Maybe I could flee
At least I could try
I could burn the woods downs
Kill every lifeless tree standing
Decimate every place of hiding
I could destroy it all
In one terrifying swoop
Certainly I am capable
What a man will do to survive
Should never be underestimated
Maybe destruction would stop them
Then again
Maybe it would just delay them
I’m really not sure
But I know one thing absolute
One fact that cannot be ignored
One truth that must be honored
Quickly I’d better decide
The hounds in shades
Are coming this way
I can hear them gasp for breath
I can hear them hunger for a death
I can sense the madness they bring
Their feet trounce across the ground
Their muscular bodies
Are for a moment weightless
The yellow eyes burn the darkness
Their crooked, some broken fangs display
The totality of all that they’ve done
From the sound there are a dozen
Brutal killers coming this way
All of them sent for me
Who unleashed them and why
Is something I’m sure I could ask
But I’m quite certain the answer
Would do nothing to stave off
The hunger that they have for me
I am doomed unless I act
Unless I do something to fend off
The darkness of everything that comes
From a place devoid of the sun
From a place where no shadows reside
But where true death is defined…
