two men in the future talk about artificial intelligence. keep in mind I am only twelve.
I am only twelve, take it easy on me.
It was Tuesday, April seventh, 2020. Technology was slowed to the point where everything was pretty much the same as 2014. The only thing that really changed now was fashion, which just repeated itself from the decade before. Any real advancements in technology are hidden from everyone except the Advancements in Technology and Science for the Better World. Anytime a person makes a breakthrough in technology or science, the ATSBW steps in and conceals it.
Yesterday, in the small, unsurveyed town of Bath, Illinois, two men talked in a Starbucks about the lectures that were endured two days before in the ATSBW headquarters in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. A micro drone sat carefully on the empty table next to the two questionable men, keeping an eye on them in case they said anything classified, and unable to be seen by them.
One sat on the far end of the shop, in the corner of the room. The other was just walking into the rich-scented coffee shop. They were both wearing black business suits, but that was as far as they resembled each other. The man on the left of the table was a scrawny looking tan man, in his mid 40’s. His eyes were lined with wrinkles, and his bony hands looked stiff. A cane with a beautifully made topper leaned on the chair that he sat in, and his lips were curled into a tight smile. His eyes were dark blue, and were looking quite sad, but his face looked generally happy otherwise. He sat nonchalantly, as he absentmindedly scratched his buzzcut hair.
A tall, broad shouldered man in a business suit sat down to the right of the gentleman with his coffee. He looked on the verge of menacing, but his whole body seemed to grin with excitement at the prospect of meeting with someone else. He looked like he was on the verge of 40, with his weirdly shaped eyebrows and his thin, short hair. But it all seemed happy. He walked with a purpose across the coffee to the old man.
“You’re early.” the tall man said in a surprised but cheery tone. The old man took a sip of his coffee before speaking.
“My business meeting was cut short. I think we have a very interesting topic to discuss today.” he got up and grabbed his cane, and leaning on it, he walked with the tall man out the door and down the empty street, the sun just peeking out of the horizon.
As they walked on the cracked and broken sidewalk, The tall man ran his fingers in his blonde hair. “So, what did you want to talk about, Ajax?” he said, going into a slow stroll to match the pace of the man with the cane. Ajax, limping along on his cane, spoke softly.
"Well, a man had bring in a AI today for lecture on how to deal with them, and I just need to know something." he thought for a moment, bringing the words together.
“Why?” He paused for a moment, before continuing on, “Why do we, us, humans, want Artificial intelligence? Why, in all things, do we want something that mimics us, that can displace us?” Ajax said. The Tall Man thought for a moment.
“As Stuart Russell put it, ‘Humankind has given itself the scientific name homo sapiens--man the wise--because our mental capacities are so important to our everyday lives and our sense of self. The field of artificial intelligence, or AI, attempts to understand intelligent entities. Thus, one reason to study it is to learn more about ourselves’ I guess that the main reason is a way for humans to become lab rats without breaking any laws or hurting anyone.” he uttered.
“That could backfire, though.” Ajax countered. “Wouldn’t they feel the same way? They would become smarter than us, and wouldn't that thought cross their minds?”
The tall man chuckled at the corny joke. “Well.” The tall man smiled. They turned the corner and continued walking ‘ I think we are done here.” said the tall man. “ Farewell, nice talk.” They came to a alley, walked inside it, and teleported to their respective homes.
