A whine, a snort, the faintest bark
floats in the air. Without a care,
she moves along memory's arc.
Her legs move in a graceful dance,
forgetting her graying muzzle,
as she is taken by sleep's trance.
What she chases is a puzzle.
Has she returned to puppyhood?
That time is past; it moves too fast
yet in dreams, that's not understood.
Does she visit halcyon days
when we wore a younger man's clothes,
unaffected by time's malaise
or what chronic age would impose?
She travels in realms of the dark,
caught in its net; unknown – and yet
familiar as her favorite park.
With a sigh, she sinks into sleep;
her adventure done for the night. Carbonate dreams, lost in the deep
recesses, no longer excite.
