All These Forevers

There have been a thousand nights on fire,

When the sky burned around us,

You and I,

embers,

glowing like fireflies,

floating like angels,

dying like ashes.

There have been a thousand sheltered days,

When light spilled through shutters,

Onto our bodies:

Our arms, our legs

Entwined like sky-reaching vines,

Like braided ropes of silk,

Like the prayer-laced hands of a child.

There have been a million words

Thrown like knives,

Like stones,

That have sharpened our love and our tongues into weapons,

Till kisses tasted like blood

And touch stung like swords.

There have been a million wrongs

That have dropped from our hands,

While we grasped for each other

With hungry fingers and mouths,

Till hate felt like passion

And anger tasted like lust.

There have been tears and tears,

So many tears,

Hot and desperate,

That have soaked each other's skin,

So many that we could drown the thousand nights before

In their pool,

Until they are almost washed clean.

There have been unending silences we've suffocated in,

And countless corners of our bodies

That we've buried our noses into,

Breathing each other in.

There's been love, so much love.

Love like creation,

Like the universe,

Like life.

Love like forests and oceans,

So deep and dark,

So profound and nuclear,

That it can extinguish everything it has made

And everything it is made of.

There have been a billion hours

That have danced by us like drunken ghosts,

Whispering across our faces,

Kissing our eyelids,

Laughing at us sleeping in innocence and shame,

Running from us before we wake.

There have been a hundred mornings hidden beneath bedsheets,

A million meetings of our eyes and lips,

A thousand nights you've burned inside my veins.

There have been dozens of silent hotel rooms,

And shrieking phones

And midnight streets painted with tears,

Floors that have lulled our drained bodies to sleep.

All the deaths we've suffered.

All the wilted flowers

And the swallowed words.

All the wasted moments,

Empty promises,

And all the fears and defenses that stormed liked armies.

All these things we've done to each other

And to ourselves.

And all the infinite seconds,

In each of them,

I've loved you

And I've hated you

And I've needed you

Through so many moments

And so many days

And so many lifetimes

And forever

And forever

And forever.
