Halt
Stop
I’ll shoot
You
Juden
Unlike me
Unlike my kind
Warped is this mind
Poisoned by control
Unknowing at times
Of my exacting role
I was sent to this place
Ordered by superiors
Men much closer
To their ideological God
Heathens dressed
As convincing heretics
Always believing
In what they are doing
And that it is right
The command given
Simple
Shoot any who try
To run for an escape
No man’s lands
Fifty plus yards
Between the fences
A wide open field
Turned killing zone
They, the runners
Will never make it
Through the wire
They will die
Long before
The most final
Of nonexistence fence
Somewhere between
Them thinking
They are gonna make it
And they could fail
I will strike them down
Death will indeed be quick
After all
I am a human being
Compassion, our disease
A universally shared sickness
That each of us suffers from
But find our own way to cure
For me
Out of sight out of mind
Death defined as a mound
Unwilling to admit
What’s buried beneath
And who placed it there
I continue on with the task
Convincing myself
That the crack
Of each well placed shot
Further means nothing
I am neither a soldier of God
Or an advocate of the devil
I am a warrior of man
Compromised to kill
And righteously skilled
Simply put
I will never miss
Run as fast they must
They cannot out run fate
Bullets care nothing
And unfortunately for them
I must care even less
Through the wire
Their only chance at escape
Freedom
What an unrealistic waste
The war might end
But not on this day
Not here and now
When and if it does
Just maybe
On the other side
We
Them and I
Prisoner and captor
German and Juden
Human to human
Could be friends
But until then
I will not regret
What I’ve done here
In this terrible place
To so many of them
The enemy of my kind
Oh so very much alive
Tool and purpose
Intertwined
Thus so am I
A man put to task
With his accurate gun
By direct orders
From those in charge
Continually I lack empathy
For those who dare try
To make a run
Through the wire
They have no chance
And truthfully
Neither do I...
