Strange thoughts come as I get older; where they come from I can't guess.
Everlasting Thoughts

Strange thoughts come as I get older;
where theyā€™re from, I canā€™t even guess.
Perhaps itā€™s ā€˜cause the end is nearer -
too close for comfort, I confess.

Take for instance, just last Sunday,
as I dozed in the last pew,
the preacher woke me with a shout
and said, ā€œHereā€™s what Heā€™s promised YOU!ā€

ā€œGifts eternal, everlasting ā€¦
of course not now,ā€ he then intoned.
It made me stop and think a while.
Why should His gifts be postponed?

Perhaps Heā€™d preview his promise,
something more concrete than dreams,
a bit of ā€œeverlastingā€ now.
(Iā€™m descended from doubting Thomas, it seems.)

How about fixing my memory
so I remember what Iā€™ve just read
or not search the rooms in my house
to find my glasses perched on my head?

Too much? Something smaller would work
besides helping me find my lost keys.
Iā€™d love to get up in the morning
without it being a pain in my ā€¦ knees.

My kids call every so often.
Iā€™m their bank, a source for their loans.
Would it really be too much to ask,
ā€œPlease, break all of their phones?ā€

OK ā€“ I finally get it ā€“
the Bible, it seems, is the teacher
and Iā€™ll try not to nap anymore
ā€˜cause Iā€™m keeping an eye on the preacher!
