My sister and her partner got married. I was the best woman. This is the toast that I gave
Being true to yourself
Isn’t that all we could ever ask of each other?
For years and years and years people have been asked
to hide their true selves and feelings.
I guess that is why they call it “being in the closet”.

My sister, Kathy, was so strong and brave that
she opened that door and decided to let years of hiding and possible shame
Come out. She knew that she would have to come out
Why?
Because she met Robin.

So, it was sort of like ripping that bandaid off.
You’re pretty sure it is going to hurt,
so you don’t want to do it
Then you rip it off anyway, only to discover
it wasn’t so bad after all. In fact, nothing had changed.

Kathy learned that our love for her was stronger than she could have ever known.
Her family was still her family and her friends were still her friends.
Amen to that!
And she knows that I am one of her biggest supporters.

After all, finding love and true happiness is what we all want for each other.
Kathy found that in Robin.
It had been but a distant memory but suddenly I was seeing a side of my sister
that I hadn’t seen in more years that I could count.
She was glowing and the little things in life seemed to be more joyful.

Robin was everything that anyone could want in a partner. She was kind, considerate, funny, loving, dedicated and just an all around good friend. Someone that you could count on.

This is where I am suppose to say. “Gee, if I wasn’t straight and married.” Oh Never mind.

I am so glad that the people of the state of Maine did the right thing and let these two get hitched.

So, raise your glasses as I wish these two may years of happiness. They have experienced some rain to get to this moment... But you know they say. No rain. No rainbows... And look the’ve found a pot of gold in each other.
