Monster Inside Me

There is a Monster inside me,
         It glares at the world thru eyes I control,
betray’d my Will: I become WE
         with anger’d heart and injured Soul.
Ah, please Mourn my lost Identity.
         hath freed the Beast that dwells in me;
but exalt grateful men whose zealous breast
         His Demons banished - their Monsters ‘pressed.

Gone like a Dream are those wondrous days
         when actions I controll’d, my heart hath Awe inspired...
but then Monster came and changed my ways.
         Faint now those friendships my barb’rous acts expired.
My anger raged at slight offense, then Tempests act, Furies’ fire commence.
Savage Monster loosed, timid kindness caged; I lost control, tides of conflict engaged.

A constant strife each moment wrought, My sovereign Will no longer reigns.
         Yet Monster’s cage is made of Thought, to fetter, to bind, to end the pain.
Why do I do these things? I am perplexed. My Monster’s blind fury? What comes next?
         Has this WE, of ME, a Tyrant made? Monster’s loose, my world it does pervade?
The cause, the Cure, of course is known, to take back the Helm - I have a plan,
         Wisdom’s seeds are kindly sewn; Monster loose -- a Boy; when caged -- a Man.

Its’ talons sharp; Its’ reach so vast; no longer worry if I’m first or last.
Yet the key to its cage, in ME is found; peace and happiness, no longer bound.

There is a Monster inside Me
         whom I both control and fear.
Its rage and fury caged will now be,
         Empathy, Virtue now held dear.

WE are no longer ME - combined; Actions are choices with Monster ruled.
Folly to think neither is mined, power to Change – no longer fooled.

I keep watch over the Monster inside.
From his fiery gaze, I no longer hide.
It lies waiting as Jeckyl...or Hyde?
