by the battered ears club
once you've told your wretched tale,
your woes of love and how they've failed
once you've laid out the beholden platter
your due sigh - 'Oh, how I've grown fatter!'
then look to me with an eyelid batter
once you've whispered false of foes
those loyalties owed to you
and recite your right to be this way
for an idle hour or two,
once you've outspoken your burning chest
and offer me your silence of regret
yes, when your brain loses it's train
and your thoughts are gone with a gale,
may I pronounce my bitter tongue
to say that the bread
was stale.
