An ode to the circle of life.
When we were Gods

Image for I once was a God

There once was a time, when my worth was unsurpassed.
To light my way the sun rose with my command.
The birds preceded me, their joyful songs telling the world of my coming.
When I moved my feet, the ground would quake, the mountains rumble.
With a wave of one hand, the seas would part allowing the eastern breeze to press in.
With a single word from me the entire world, began its rotation, and the stars would slip from the sky to hide with the moon until I beckoned them once more.
My house was a fortress in the middle of a very enchanted forest.
So tall did I stand, nothing was impossible for me to accomplish.

Then it happened, almost overnight, my magic faltered, and my status forever changed.
No longer was my voice the commanding law.
Gone was my ability to predict the rain.
Darkness slipped into the world without restraint.
What was once a given, became clouded with doubt.
No longer could my hands hold back the storms.
My breath now falls wasted on living ears, my voice drowned out by vice and the songs of the wicked.
The tumble did not kill me, no ... that would have been too kind.

Yes, I was a God, but then he turned five.
Oh, what would I give for one last look into those once believing eyes?
How fleeting the joy of being held reverent above all else.
Sweet was the sound of his voice calling my name, now replaced with "Get out of the way old man."
Lost is my value, my respect, my worth as a man.
"Father" now a dirty word ... thought of as a burden, a hindrance, an obstacle to be overcome.

Yes, I once was Apollo or even Zeus ... but then he turned five.
Oh, it is so sad, that my own dad is no more, unable to help me to understand.
However, I believe he would tell me, that there was no answer,
As I, myself, had to long ago ... turned five.
