Strange actions are being performed from the De courts family and Elizabeth is curious. |
The rest of Theater class strolled by quickly, but every single minute I could feel his eyes on me, though I dared not to make eye contact with Wes Dѐ Court anyone. My stomach did flips and turns when I recalled what Wes said to me. Could he be telling the truth? Did he really think about me that way? Could a boy fall in love with a girl so quickly? Was it possible to fall in love at first sight? My mind burned with questions as my stomach turned into knots. The bell rang at 10:00 and soon the halls were swarmed with students. Some pushed their way forward to their next class, others lingered to text, and some wondered off to see other students. “See today wasn’t so bad twin” Brittney chirped as she caught up to me. “We only had a couple of new guys join our school.” She gave me a smile and hugged her books closely to her. I rolled my eyes and gave her a soft sigh. “I’m tired already and I’ve only been through one class.” I groaned. The knots in my stomach suddenly tightened even more. “Maybe you should get to bed more early,” a new voice chimed. Brittney and I stopped and turned around to see Rebecca smiling and holding her books in her hands. She greeted us with that bright smile. Right behind her stood her three brothers chuckling softly and smiling at each other. “I’m going to go Eliza, see ya later.” I watched as Brittney spun on her heels and exited it through the door. Through the window of the door I watch her skip up some stone steps and enter into another building. “Hi Rebecca,” I said giving her a small smile. I was very much surprised by Rebecca’s sudden greeting and a little alarmed for she may have been listening to me and Brittney’s conversation. “Hello Elizabeth.” She continued to smile. I could help but notice that Rebecca was very lovely. Besides her maroon colored hair and emerald green eyes, I noticed that she wore black tight leggings that showed off her toned legs. On her feet she wore nice light brown boots that looked like there was wool in the inside. “I like your corset.” Rebecca said interrupting my thoughts. “Oh, thank you.” I blushed gently “The style of it shouts out Victorian and Goth.” Her reason for my liking my corset made me truly smile and released the tight knots in my stomach. “I do love the Victorian age, but let’s stay in this day and age for we best get to class, shall we proceed?” I asked as I held open the exit door. “Oh yes.” Rebecca smiled. She went through the door with Viktor and Robert following after her. A hand suddenly touched mine making me jump a little. It was Wes just touching my hand for a few and then grasping and holding the door open for me. I gave him a smile, “Thank you.” He nodded his head with a slight smile back. I exited and hurried to catch up with Rebecca. Rebecca and I started to chat about the Victoria Era as we headed up some stone steps and toward the door that Brittney had entered. Just inches from opening up the door, I stopped and looked at Rebecca. “Hey Rebecca, what class do you have next?” I asked. I watched as she took out a white piece of paper from her pocket and unfolded it. “Well I know us three, Robert, Wes, and I have Earth and Environmental Science with Mrs. Geary.” She replied “I have that class next…” I said softly. “That also means you have the same lunch period as me.” My interest was suddenly piqued. “What do you have for third period?” I asked thinking it wasn’t what I had. Rebecca looked at her piece of paper. “Language arts with Mrs. Sass.” She replied. “Are you nuts?!” I cried without realizing. “Do all four of you have the same schedule?” I threw my hands into the air. “As a matter of fact not all of us, just those three, I just have first period with them.” Viktor suddenly spoke. “Hush!” Rebecca hissed through her teeth. I froze for the hiss sounded like real live hiss from an animal. A suddenly shock of fear made the hairs on my arm and back of my neck stand up suddenly. Rebecca looked at me uncomfortably. “And what do you have for fourth period?” I asked softly, rubbing my hand on the back of my neck. “Spanish with Mrs. Nelson.” She replied gently. “So.” I said softly. “We’ll be seeing lots of each other aren’t we?” I joked lightly. Rebecca, Viktor, and Robert became silent as they looked at me awkwardly. “I’m glad for that.” Wes chimed in suddenly. I looked into his beautiful eyes silently. “This means we can all get to know each other a lot better” he said darkly. His eyes suddenly turned into a vicious winter green color. I inhaled softly and held my breath for just a second. What did he mean “get to know each other a lot better?” I small shiver went down my spine, but I quickly spun around and headed to my next class. *** I entered Mrs. Geary’s room plastering on a smile. “Hey Eliza, what’s up?” It was Kristen who had spoken to me. He had short frizzy brown hair with brown freckles on her face; and she was always there for me when I needed to smile. “Oh nothing,” I smiled gently. “It’s just that we have new students.” “New students?!” I watched as Kristen’s eyes grew big. “New students?!” another student exclaimed from the back. People were always nosy in high school and always listened to other people’s conversation. The news of new students spread through the class like wildfire. I shook my head side to side with a sigh and sat down at my desk. “Where are they?” Kristen asked softly. I nodded my head gently toward the door and saw Viktor speaking to my science teacher, Mrs. Geary. “You guys can have a seat behind Danika over there,” I heard Mrs. Geary speak. Viktor bowed his head and turned to leave as Rebecca, Robert, and Wes enter the room. I watched as Wes walked gracefully to his seat. Rebecca sat behind Danika, who just sat just behind me. Robert sat across from Rebecca, taking Grey’s seat unknowingly. Wes decided to just sit in an empty seat that was beside me. Kristen looked at me with curious sparkling eyes. I gave her a smile in return and knew what she was trying to say to me with those pretty brown eyes of hers. “Kristen, I would you like to meet Rebecca, Robert, and Wes Dé Court, outside if you noticed before he left, that was their older brother, Viktor Dé Court.” The three of them smiled at Kristen with a warm smile, and Kristen gladly smiled back. I sense of calmness suddenly came over me as I relaxed back into my seat. “Hey, where’s Amanda? Out again?” I asked Kristen. “Yeah” Kristen sighed as she opened up her black binder that sat in front of her. “Matt isn’t here either?” I asked, but Kristen just shrugged her shoulders, not knowing the answer. Amanda and Matter were my assigned group members for science class. And we usually had group work every day. So if Amanda wasn’t here, I had to deal with Matt. Matt was a show off, but he wasn’t very bright. Amanda was my other half of my brain power. If neither of them were here today, it meant I would have to do the work all by myself, and I didn’t want to do that. “Oh hey, Grey! Is Matt here?” I asked sitting up in my seat. When Grey had entered the classroom, Grey just stood a foot away from Robert, staring at him. Robert, in response, stared at him. “Oh Grey-hey?” I said in a sing song voice. Not one inch of movement from either Robert or Grey “God, what is it with all this staring today?!” I cried. “Oh what?” Grey shook his head as he came back from reality. “Is Matt here today?” I asked once again. “No.” I gave a miserable sigh. It looked like I was going to be doing the entire group today. My happiness suddenly plummeted to the bottom of my stomach. I suddenly looked back at Grey, who continued to stand and look at Robert. I looked at Robert, who was still staring at grey. Turning my attention to the front of the class, I heaved a great annoyed sigh and crossed my arms over my chest. “Stop it.” I heard Rebecca hiss quietly to Robert. Only this hiss sounded like a regular scolding from a human being and not like a dark threatening hiss from an animal. I just had to look at her. She looked at me with blank stare. I clenched my teeth gently and rapped my nails rapidly upon my desk. I was getting tired of getting blank stares and silence from this family. Why don’t they try speaking up and explain themselves? The more I thought of this, the more annoyed I became. I decided to turn my attention back to Grey. I watched as Grey continued to stare at Robert. Robert, ignoring Rebecca’s hiss, stared at Grey. I glanced at Wes who had to start to doodle in his notebook. Turning around, Kristen had taken her cell phone out to text; meanwhile Rebecca continued to stare at me with a blank expression. I sat forward in my seat and suddenly slammed my fist upon the desk letting out an outrageous tone of voice. “EARTH TO GREY!” Wes’s head suddenly picked up and looked at me with concern. Kristen dropped her phone on her desk and looked at me. “Elizabeth Burch,” she started. “Calm down.” I let out a soft growl and huffed. Grey shook his head violently side to side. Taking one of his fingers, he shoved it into one of his ears and shook it gently. Once again, coming to his senses, he spoke to Robert. “Hey man, you’re in my seat.” Robert said nothing but continued to stare at Grey. I looked closely at Robert. Robert’s eyes had turned into that vicious winter green color like Wes had. They suddenly flashed as Robert tilted his head up toward the light. I couldn’t believe what I was looking at. A feeling of fuzziness came over me. The sound of other students and teachers talking died down slowly, until I hear utterly nothing. My head slowly slumped down, my arms relaxed at my sides. The fuzziness turned into a feeling of being drained, I felt heavy and exhausted. Then something suddenly made physical contact me, it was cold, but very gentle. I turned my head to the side and looked down to find a hand on top of mine. My eyes stared at the fingers for a little, then they strolled up the arm to see who that hand belonged to. It was Wes. I let out a soft gasp to see that his eyes were icy blue. The room suddenly came to a halt when I looked deeply into those eyes. The draining feeling faded as a warm feeling began to rise within me. It wasn’t a happy feeling, just warm, tender, and soft. Like a small gentle fire burning in the fireplace. It felt like hours had passed us as I stared into his eyes. “ENOUGH!!” Rebecca roared. It was so quick! It felt like my ears suddenly unplugged and I could hear again. I swallowed some of my saliva as I inhaled and began to choke. Flinging my hand up into the air as a response, I tried to stand, when suddenly I lost balance and fell back. I shut my eyes as I could hear the air whip past my ear. Tightening up my body, I was ready for the worst to come. I was ready for my head to smash into pieces or crack as soon as I was going to make contact with the concrete floor. I waited and waited patiently. I came to realize the feeling that I had. I felt like I was hovering in thin air. I first peered open my left eye and then my right. The first thing that I saw was just a bright light. “Are you okay Elizabeth?” I saw a black silhouette, but the voice sounded from a female. “I’m fine Kristen just let me up.” My breathing had returned to me, heat radiated from my cheeks. “I’m not the one who’s holding you,” Kristen replied. “Wes is.” Before I could react, I was slowly pulled up. I looked around to see everyone’s eyes on me. I looked out into the hallway. None of the teachers had noticed the incident. I turned to look at Wes, who looked at me with concern. “I’m okay, thank you.” I said softly. Wes just gave me a smile in return and helped me to sit back into my seat comfortably. Kristen patted my shoulder gently and gave me a smile before sitting back down in her seat. I took a deep breath and tried my best to calm down. The bell rung and the sound of the door made me jump slightly. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Wes turn to look at me, but I couldn’t bring myself to look at him. I was so confused and tired, and to tell the truth, a little scared. The Dѐ Courts were so mysterious and weird. There were so many odd things about them, their replies, their facial expression, their body language… and their eyes. I looked down into my lap and began to twiddle my thumbs and bite my bottom lip gently. What was I to do? What was I to say? I was at a loss for words, like I was last period. *** The sound of the lunch bell sounded outside the door. Everyone quickly grabbed their phones, purses, and wallets before heading out the door. I quickly scurried out of my seat and headed for the door. Kristen caught up with me and the both of us headed up some stone steps silently. Behind us I could hear Rebecca scolding Robert like he was a five year old. I shook my head and choose to ignore what she said next. Kristen and I entered the lunch room. We both inhaled deeply, smelling the delicious chicken sandwiches and buttered mash potatoes that were being served today. My name sounded from behind me. “Meet ya at the lunch table.” I said to Kristen. Kristen nodded at me and went on her way. I turned around and ignored the Dé Court family as they passed by me. “Brittney…” I let out a soft sigh of relief. “Hey girl,” Brittney replied with a smile. “How is science going?” “Not very well,” Brittney and I entered the lunch line and waited for our turn. “I was trying to swallow some of my extra saliva and somehow managed to inhale at the same time, thus I started to choke.” I explained Brittney let out a chuckle, “You salivate too much, were you thinking of Wes?” “No,” I replied shortly. “But Wes is also in my Science class; along with his sister Rebecca, and his brother Robert.” “Oh!” Brittney let out a soft squeak “Is he?! How did Wes react?” “Um…” I didn’t know how to explain to Brittney what was happening between Grey and Robert, between Wes and me, and Rebecca’s outburst. I tried to make it short and sweet. “In response I tried to stand up, but I lost my balance and I fell back. Wes caught me before I made contact with the floor.” “Did he?!” She looked at me with big eyes. We grabbed a white Styrofoam plate and started to put food on them. “It wasn’t much of a big deal really,” I lied, though I knew full well something was up with the Dé Court family. “Well it seemed like it was a big deal for Wes. I mean no other guy in the classroom tried to save you or catch you did they?” She asked. I shook my head no in response. “See? You mean something to him, even if it’s just a little bit. He’s concerned with your safety; he doesn’t want to see you hurt.” I said nothing in response as I approached the lunch lady and handed her some money. *** I arrived at my usual table. There was Kristen, Danika, Brittney, Heather, and Holly. “So how is everyone?” I asked pulling out a pull chair and setting my food upon a bright yellow, circular, table. Holly started to un-wrap her chicken sandwich. “Nothing much, French is as hard as ever.” She said taking a big bite out of her sandwich. The table was quiet as we munched on our food. Finishing my last bite of mash potatoes, I grabbed my purse and fished out my wallet. I stood before the snack machine and started to push some change into it. “Hey Elizabeth.” I turned my head and there stood Wes. “Oh Wes… hi.” I tried my best not to sound unpleasant. “How are you feeling?” he asked softly. I pushed in the last coin and stared at my choices, though I was in deep thought as to what to say. “I’m okay. I’m still breathing and living.” I chuckled softly. I looked through the reflection of the snack machine and saw Wes’s sister and brother talking silently. Wes had turned his head to look at them and chuckled deeply in his throat. I watched as they suddenly looked up at and smiled at him. That was totally weird. “Can I assume something is funny?” I asked pushing some black number buttons. Wes looked at me apologetically. “Sorry, it’s a family thing.” He looked down at the floor. I looked at him as my snack began to be pushed forward. “You can hear them way over there?” I questioned softly. Wes looked up at me suddenly, but said nothing. “You can hear them from way over there, can’t you?” I said again. “That’s like, impossible they’re like 20 feet from you.” Wes again didn’t say anything. I shook my head, bent down to grab my snack from the dispenser, and walked away. I chewed gently on my chocolate cover pretzels. Every now and then I glanced toward the Dé Court’s table. Robert was eating Wes’s French fries that he bought and Rebecca and Wes chatted softly to each other. Deep down I was really curious about this family. A lot of people would probably just keep away if they were in my shoes, but I wasn’t going to do that. I liked adventure and my curiosity. My curiosity surprisingly has never led me the wrong way or to a dangerous or bad thing. I knew my limitation and the Dѐ Courts were not even close my limits. I stood up, bid my friends goodbye, threw out my trash and headed to their table. “Hey guys,” I smiled a small smile. Wes was the only one who looked up at me; Rebecca looked down upon the table, while Robert kept on nibbling on his fries. I took a deep breath and spoke, “Do you guys know where you’re going next? I can show you if you don’t.” I asked. Rebecca continued to look at the table, but spoke gently to me. “We know where we’re going next, but thank you for trying to help us.” She left it at that. Wes gave me that small warm smile. I smiled back and headed toward the exit wondering what was going to happen next period. Would I faint? Would I trip? I suddenly remembered Wes’s hand upon mine. Was Wes trying to tell me something, if so, then what? I believe Brittney was right about Wes caring about me. She was right about no other guy trying to help me or catch me, not even Robert. So many questions, so little answers there were. |
