Story about how things are in 2057 after the apocolypse from the view of 17-year-old Marie |
****PROLOGUE**** I had never known what layed outside of Calamity. The fence surrounding the whole town was menacing enough without knowing what else was out there. It had large, barbed wire coils looped through the top and the chain link was always buzzing with electricity. The only way out was a small space between the thirtieth iron post and the fence itself. The wire holding the two together had been cut there. You could only get through if the electricity was off, which it almost never was. But, somehow, Keith, my best friend, had managed to plan exactly when it would be. ****STORY**** "Where do you think you're going, Marie?" Mom asked as I was almost out the front door. I grimaced. Then I lied. "Uhmm...for a walk." "By yourself? At this time of night? No. Besides, you know a Ward will stop you." "No, I'm not going by myself. Keith will be with me and if they stop him, he's a legal adult, so they won't be able to really do anything." Mom sighed and shook her head. "I still don't like that my 16-year-old daughter is running around with some boy thats three years older than her. Especially since he's old enough to have his Levity Liscence." "Just because he can drive a Levity doesn't mean I shouldn't hang out with him. Besides, I'll be 17 in six days." Mom waved her hand in the air like she was batting at a fly. "Alright, alright. Whatever. But if you get cought and hauled off to jail, don't expect me to bail you out." I smiled, hugged her, then bolted out the door, closing it behind me. Keith had something he wanted to show me. He wouldn't tell me what it was, he said it was a surprise. I met him at our usual spot, beside an old oak tree about ten yards from the fence. |
