Preview of This Is War
Writhing, as if I was in pain, and sweat pouring down my face made me spring up into a sitting position on my bed. I was entangled in the bed sheets which only made me panick, like I needed any more stress.
Lately, strange things have been happening and I've been having the same dream every night. It was of the day my closest friend, Zyla, committed suicide and I was there to watch. The image of her sitting on the bathroom floor surrounded in empty bottles of all sorts of medication and in the end pulling out a gun and shoving the barrel down her throat and pulling the trigger, floated around in my mind. The blood that soaked the bathroom floor, the look on Zyla's face as she drew her last breathe, tears running down her face, and her hair all tossled making her look crazy, all those memories that haunted my mind, day and night.
Mentally slapping myself in the face to drown out the past, I got out of bed and walked over to the door that led to the bathroom. My footsteps slowed to a stop a few feet in front of the door. Lying on the ground was a puddle of blood, and it led a trail to the door. On the door were bloody handprints. I know I should've walked out of the room and out of the house, but me being the stupid one, I opened the door. What I didn't know was that opening that door would be the worst mistake ever.
On the other side of the door left me staring in shock and slowly, tears rolled down my face. Lying in the bathtub, were the bloody remains of Zyla, except her body was torn apart into sections. Water filled the tub so that it splashed over the side and onto the floor. The liquid had turned red from the blood pouring from the dead carcass. Slowly, I took one step after another and backed away from the horrendous scene, my eyes never leaving her dead, lifeless ones.
I turned to run but instead, hit a hard surface. Cautiously, I lifted my head and looked into the blood red eyes of a bloodthirsty monster. Its teeth were razor sharp and as long as my forearm. My scream was stifled by its hand that had reached up and covered my mouth. With very little effort, the monster picked me up under the armpits and threw me into the bathtub. I thrashed my arms and legs, feeling them strike the monster but not having any effect on it. The nasty creature held my head under water with one hand while the other, with its long nails sharp as a razor, pierced through the skin around my collarbone. I could tell I was losing air, and fast.
The hand on my head disappeared and the one with the nails piercing though my collarbone lifted me up out of the water. Spitting out the metallic tasting water that had made its way into my mouth, I opened my eyes to see myself dangling in the air, only being held by the flesh around my heart.
I was forced onto the ground where I lay gasping for breath and hot blood running off my body onto the tile, creating a small puddle. This is it, I thought, I’m going to die right here. Turns out, I was right because after that thought the unknown creature slammed my body against the mirror.
I let out a gasp from the pain. I could feel the shards of glass lodged in my back along with the steady stream of blood. Again, my body was thrown onto the floor. At this point, I had no idea what was really happening. Everything was blurry in my eyes.
I sat on the tiled ground with my back against the wall. My vision slowly became clear. Standing in front of me was Zyla, he body whole again. In her right hand was the same gun she killed herself with. Her skin looked rotten and decayed, while her eyes were plain white, making her look as if she’s staring into my soul.
“You…me…together…forever…best…friend.” Zyla spoke in a raspy voice.
At first I couldn’t understand what she said. With my head bowed, I tried to make out her words. Seconds later I, put it together. I lifted my head but before I could react, I saw her raise her right arm, pointing the gun at me. I managed a stutter before I she pulled the trigger and a loud boom was the last thing I heard before everything went black.
