This poem is about what independence means to me personally and as a country. |
A word that means freedom A chance to be myself To express myself To feel free That’s what independence Means to me Independence The 4th of July Freedom Of our country Independence A time of celebration Freedom For our nation Declaration of Independence A document that our forefathers wrote So that for generations to come We’d have our independence What do I really know? I still have plenty to learn But I do know that Deep down inside I no longer yearn To be free Because I broke away from my parents Like the U.S. from mother England But at the same time I still am trying to figure out I, myself, and me As I struggle with my freedom Like I struggled without it I try to figure out Just what my life is all about What my future has in store for me And just how does God want me to be? I ask myself these questions The answer’s vary and aren’t clear But one thing stands tall and true I won’t give up my independence Because it’s too precious and special And has a powerful presence… When you hear independence What do you think? Of your country, yourself, Or some other person or thing? To me it’s incredibly valuable And necessary when the time is right Sometimes things do work out Don’t give up the fight Even as you struggle and suffer Respect and love yourself Hold your head up high Don’t look down to hurt But be humble and fly Learn to love others and respect them too But just don’t hate They deserve their freedom too Let them be themselves And you do the same To have no independence To me is a shame And a frightening fate. |
