                  3. Prose Synopsis:  Severino lived in a part of Italy that was Austria prior to the end of WW I.  He serves in the Austrian army at Mt. Pasubio where conditions are terrible.  Many casualties come from avalanches as much as from battle.
After the war, Severino returns to his home, now part of Italy and works for his father in the silkworm business.  The business goes under.  Severino and Angela meet and court.  Severino is offered a job with Angela’s father on the farm.  But a fire destroys the land and Severino’s opportunity to work.  Shortly after the fire Angela’s father dies.
Severino immigrates to America and lives and works in New York.  He finds a room in a boarding house and forms a good relationship with the wife of the owner.  As the owner becomes more abusive toward his wife, Severino gets into a fight with the  husband and kills him.  Afterward, Severino and the widow, Antonia, have an affair. 
Angela makes 2 trips to America, and Severino makes 2 trips to Italy.  Each trip results in Angela becoming pregnant. 
Severino struggles with his inability to send money to Italy for his children’s support during WW II.  After the war he travels to Italy and finds that his wife has died.

        B. First Supporting Character: Angela (Fauri) Cuzelli

                  3. Prose Synopsis:  Angela lives in the small northern Italy mountain village of Bresimo. She is close to her father.  She fell in love at an early age with Dario, but because of the practice of arranged marriages at the time, Dario was made to marry someone else, breaking Angela’s heart. 
Angela throws herself into her father’s farm.  She works hard, learns how to make the best of the land and in the process forms a bond with nature and her environment. 
She marries Severino but remains in Italy when he immigrates to America.  She receives money from Severino to support the family, but by the time WW II begins her husband is prohibited from sending money.  She and her 5 children quickly become destitute.
While at church there is a fire in Angela’s home.  The children are unharmed, but Angela is accused of starting the fire to kill her children.  She is placed into an asylum where she remains because Severino cannot travel to Italy to arrange for her release. 
When the war ends, Severino finally goes to Italy to find that Angela has died in the hospital and she was placed into an unmarked grave.

                  2. Character Sketch Profile: Name:  Antonia Pasella
                  3. Prose Synopsis: Antonia and her husband own the boarding house where Severino lives in New York.  Antonia’s husband is jealous of how much attention his wife pays to Severino and becomes abusive toward her.  Severino confronts him and a fight ensues.  Severino kills her husband and soon afterward she and Severino have an affair.
This affair is on-again, off-again over the years as Severino struggles with his infidelity, especially while WW II rages and he is unable to send money to support his children.
After the death of Angela Severino and Antonio have a long time love affair but they never marry.
