A poem for a cool night, a warm fire, a good beer, and a memory of her.
In a milder winter the memories come haunting
Those silent shadows are never quite lost...yet
In a heavier snow, they'd been buried long ago
And I, a freer man whose caution he'd tossed
Into the barren and frozen unseen.

Where the deer and the antelope play...

Marred by the weight of that name on the wind
Screaming as it whips through the leafless with ease
I am heavy with sorrow and my loss of tomorrow
'Cause the future is not what it used to be
Each day a new beginning to the same old end.

And the skies are not cloudy all day...

Somewhere out there in that not-quite cold air
Where the grass and the trees still hold green
I relive it all in the quiet here and now, in the heart
- oh my heavy heart -
of the barren and frozen unseen.
