I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about life today compared to when I was young. I realized today that I can't remember the last time I didn't feel tired. The way our government fails us today has left everyone I've talked to about it scared and worried. Our economy is in the toilet. Americans work longer hours for less money than about 70 percent of the rest of the world. Those of us who have made a life of working for a living are paid a minimum of $80,000 less per year, on average, than those who sit on their asses in an office. We spend our lives working all the overtime we can get our hands on just to get through to our next paycheck. We spend a lifetime hoping we don't get sick because one missed day means no electricity for the next month. Then we end up having to pay no less than 40 percent of our medical bills if we're fortunate enough to have insurance. If we're unfortunate enough to be out of work, unemployment will give us half of what we normally earn. When that runs out, Social Security will give us just over $700 a month if some asshole at another desk decides we qualify. Between 60-hour work weeks and the emotional and mental stress of being without work, it's no wonder we're always tired.
