Another poem I wrote while I was staying at a homeless shelter detoxing from pot and PCP
The Other Side

Weight of a well balanced pistol
Resting comfortably in my hand
Goodbye notes wrote, easy to find
Prayer said, peace has been made
Heart slows, calm flows through my veins
Final drag on a final cigarette
Pistol rises of its own accord
Muzzle cool against my temple

Finger squeezes without thinking
The hammer drops, time slows
Bullet pierces flesh, bone, brain
A blinding flash, then black
Body crumples to the floor
It will rise no more

A still sea on the other side
Short swim to shore
To wait for her
