How much do we take for granted?
You gaze towards the shining, rising sun
Standing, basking in its gentle blessing
You watch the moving painting of the world
as it passes by in silent soothing calm
You see the mighty mountains’ majesty
Alit beneath the fires of the sun

This peaceful morning sight you gaze upon
A gift it is; this gift I give to you
And though you never asked for it at all
I see the joy it brings you every day
And so I give it all to you again

I am your silent, watchful guardian
For though it often seems like I’m not there
If I was gone who knows what darkness could
slip undetected through the space I left
and poison dreams or nightmares bring to you
What solace would you have without security?

Yet each of these you take for granted now
You never lend me any thought or thanks
You freely take the things I freely give
But truthfully I never cross your mind
Is giver less important than the gift?
You always take the view and look right through
my heart but never think of why I’m there
You love the light and sight I give to you
but even though it’s me that gives these things
I never cross your mind or get a thought
You’re always looking past but never at

Perhaps if I was broken or destroyed
You’d see things differently than you do now
You’d get the view, yes, nonetheless
But with it would come creeping thieves and cold
Things you’ve never thought I kept from you

What would happen if I disappeared?
Would you notice if I wasn’t there?
Would you notice?
Would you care?
