“I’ve done it!” Steve yelled into the phone. “Done…what?” I said, bemused. “Come over to my place, you’ll see,” he said. When I arrived at his place, I was greeted by a large satellite dish and a strangely shaped crystal, along with numerous devices I could not identify. Steve was sitting wearing headphones, tuning knobs and twiddling dials like an excited schoolboy. He noticed me, made a few adjustments and beckoned me over, producing another pair of earphones. “What is it?” I asked. “Shh,” he whispered. “You’re interfering with transmission. I’ve managed to intercept communication from an alien race. We’re about to make contact.” He was very vague when I asked about the particulars. “Neutrino beams…perfect crystal…never mind. It’s coming from just outside our galaxy and seems to be getting closer. Listen.” I donned the proffered headphones. The signal was complete nonsense. “Wait a minute, I’ll turn on the universal translator.” Steve flicked a switch. “I don’t like these life forms, X-314.” “Me neither, Z-159. That’s why we’re out to destroy them – nothing stands a chance against our ultra-high power Dimensional Destroyer Death-ray.” “Excellent, let’s obliterate them. What are those creatures, anyway?” “I’ll look it up…here we go. Apparently they’re called humans.” |
