Response to Revelation

Revelation
Robert Frost (1915)

We make ourselves a place apart
Behind light words that tease and flout,
But oh, the agitated heart
Till someone find us really out.

’Tis pity if the case require
(Or so we say) that in the end
We speak the literal to inspire
The understanding of a friend.

But so with all, from babes that play
At hide-and-seek to God afar,
So all who hide too well away
Must speak and tell us where they are



Response to Revelation

My sins are scars upon my face.
The lines of good and evil mark
Unhidden medals all may trace
In search for light within the dark.

With limping tongue and stuttered voice
Are spoken remedies of strife,
That reminisce my uttered choice
To victims held beneath the knife.

Deceivers bold, with fig leaves sewn,
Unspoken deeds of men concealed,
Are mere pretenders to the throne
With masks removed and debts revealed.
