The world is at war and science is the only answer for mankind's survival.
The New Gods
by Stephen A Abell.

Number of Words: 275

“This is going to get ugly.” That’s what Jefferson had said, right before he threw the switch and set the electric current running through the circuit.

He hadn’t been wrong either. The two million or so volunteers, lined out in the gene-pods, suddenly opened their eyes and screamed in shear agony. The sound was deafening, and chilled my very soul, as it came through the lab speakers.

“Turn that bloody thing off.”

“Yes sir,” called one of the technicians and the multitude abruptly silenced.

The quiet was worse.

Within the pods the changes had begun. It had taken twenty years to perfect the procedure; using the crippled, terminally injured, mentally retarded, or anyone else we could get our hands on, as human guinea pigs. At times like these red-tape lies in tatters and rules are out the window... ever since the first portal opened up. Now the fruition of our labours were being formed.

We’ve been relegated to these dismal subterranean depths as the monstrous, indefinable entities leech the life out of everything... including the very air itself. Jefferson, myself, and the other scientists, came up with a way to regain the offensive. We’ve progressed evolution so we may live and fight in the decaying atmosphere of our dying planet.

Cthulhu and The Old Gods may have returned; but we are The New Gods.

Worldwide there are over a billion volunteers evolving... when the pods open, the new breed of man will be released - faster, stronger, more intelligent, and with one genetically ingrained desire and thought... Survive.

In two days time, when the first wave is complete, things most definitely, will get ugly.
