A guardian angel must choose between mortal love and eternal life.
Camille sighed as she gazed down at the sleeping face of the man in the bed. Even in sleep his good looks were clear, his head dark haired against the pillow. Fine laughter lines near his closed eyes hinted at the warm smile he possessed. Having watched over him for some time now Camille knew every inch of this face. A face she had come to love.

Camille was a guardian angel, one of the most important classes of angel’s, ranking only behind messenger angels. Earthly humans had two guardian angels in their lifetime, one to see them into adulthood and one from adulthood until the end of their days. Camille had been Edward’s guardian angel since his twenty-first birthday, one year earlier.

To be a guardian angel was a great honor in the angel world. To protect your charge from the forces of evil and ensure that he, or she, would only exit this world at a time of natures choosing was a prized task.

In training for her role Camille had been prepared for forming close feelings for her charge. It was only natural. However love was a different matter.

Love between angels and human’s was strictly forbidden. To fall in love was to betray the pledge of protection that angels undertake. Angles must seek nothing for themselves and exist only to protect their charge and human life.

Camille considered the sleeping form before her. How she wanted him so much! She wanted to kiss those lips, run her fingers through his hair, and feel his muscled body against hers. She wanted to feel alive.

Angel law was clear. Were she to kiss her charge she would become visible to him and thus mortal. She would forever be cast out to live in the mortal world and be denied eternal life.

Would her return her love? Camille wondered to herself. Would she be able to live without her wings? If she were to kiss him her blessed life as a guardian would be lost.

It was a life Camille could no longer live without love.

Edward stirred in his sleep as he felt something soft brush across his mouth. He dreamed he was being kissed.

Waking with a start Edward brought a hand to his mouth recalling the dream.

Feeling the presence of someone in the room he reached over and snapped on the lamp.

The room lit up to reveal a beautiful woman sitting at the end of his bed. Long dark hair swirled around a heart shaped face. Her anxious blue eyes peered back at him. A slender, lightly bronzed body was draped in a white gown secured with gold clips at the shoulders.

And protruding from her back was a pair of white angel wings.

“Hello Edward” spoke the angel softly.

Rubbing sleep from his eyes Edward stared back at her.

“How do you know my name?”

“I am your guardian angel,” replied the angel.

“My guardian angel?”

“Yes. My job is to protect you. Was to protect you.”

“Was?”

“I have become mortal. Soon I shall lose my wings. I have broken angel law and fallen in love with you. I kissed you in your sleep now I am one of you.”

Camille nervously awaited Edward’s reaction.

“I always felt someone was watching over me” Edward replied, sitting up further in the bed.

“You are to be mortal now because of me?” Edward asked of her.

“Yes. I could no longer live without feeling your mouth on mine. Even if it is to be just this one kiss I had to know.”

Taking in her beauty and her obvious sweetness Edward smiled. “I don’t think it will be just this one kiss, angel.”

“My name is Camille.”

“Camille. That is a beautiful name for an angel.”

“Thank you” Camille blushed.

Moving up the bed Camille took Edward’s face in her hands and kissed him again, properly this time, their tongues meeting and entwining.

Breaking apart Edward’s smile warmed Camille’s heart.

“Everything will be alright, you may lose your wings but you have gained me.”

Three days later Camille’s wings fell out. Wrapping them carefully in tissue paper she placed them into a drawer for keeping for when the child in her belly grew up and asked how her parents had met.
