Waiting for Christmas morning; she goes to bed and tries to sleep, but she’s Awake most of the night, waiting, squeezing her eyes shut, and feigning sleep Imagining all the Christmas wonder Santa will bring, the toys, and candy Toys for her because she had been so very good this year In her stocking, small gifts, overflowing; she had been so good this year Needing to sleep because Santa doesn’t come if you’re awake Giving her everything on her list; she has been so good this year. Forgetting that she stuffed a slimy slug, in Owen’s backpack because he Out ran her in track, or that she broke Jenny’s doll; hid it in the hamper, Remembering only that she had been so good this year; she smiles, yawns.
