a short story about two lovers saying goodnight knowing that goodbye is coming soon.
They stood in the entryway, he preparing to leave as she nervously avoided his gaze, aware his dark brown eyes would be able to read her so well.  One look and he would know this was getting harder for her, the nights, full of tenderness and passion, but also, always goodbye.  Different choices, different commitments had left no place for anything but stolen moments in the dark of night and quick farewells.  He ran his fingers through her hair, tilted her face upward and softly kissed her goodnight; a quick peck and he was ready to go.  His kiss speaking the words she didn't want to hear.

His mind already moving on to the drive home, his busy work day tomorrow, his responsibilities and commitments.  Her mind lingering on the passion and play of earlier, her heart heavy and not ready for this to end.  She longed to say, "Wait, pull me close, love me a little longer."  But only her tears flowed, spoke for her.

The tears becoming more of a habit in their goodbyes, an awkward interruption to their stolen moment.  She feared her tears would soon anger him; her inability to take things as they stood rubbed against his logical practicality.  What they had was what they had right now, no longing or sentiment could change the restraints of time and distance, yet she always pushed for more.

Driving home he would think of the pleasure and the laughter they always share and smile; but the reality of their situation stood unchanging.  She would remember his kiss and his touch long after his car left the drive and sadness and joy would compete for space in her heart.
