" The Year I Almost Lost My Friend"

“Hey Dannielle, did you remember what today is!?”
“Yeah, I sure do,” I shouted back, “you ready for tonight?”
“Heck yes, I cannot wait till we have our national friendship anniversary sleepover.”
The friends that I have been walking with start to laugh at us. I began pilling Hannah off to the side but then she shouts “Hey guys, WHATTTTTTSSSSS UPPPPPPPPP?” at the top of her lungs. She has been embarrassing me lately around them; I do not know what her problem is. It is like she wants to hurt my personal reputation up here that I have worked so hard to build up.
“Hannah, I already told you, we do not call it our anniversary, we simply call it a friendship reunion. Kind of like when they have a high school reunion for this retarded place here.”
“Well I am sorry, I forgot, I should have not even said anything, I should have waited till we got home. I am really sorry”, replied Hannah.
See the thing about Hannah is that she is so nice that she will say sorry, even if she knows she is right, she puts everyone else before her and helps anyone in need. That is why we have been best friends since we were one year old. She taught me how to crawl out of my crib, how to open up baby proof gates when we got older, and she has always been there for me when I just needed to talk. The only time she refuses to talk is when she is going to go to a sports practice or game. Hannah is the tomboy, nerd, and nicest girl you will ever meet. Sometimes I wish I was her instead of myself because not only is she the girl I have always wanted to be but she has a great family life and I don’t.
         “It’s okay…..” I turn around to find Hannah gone. I look down the hallway and see she is walking with her friends on the softball team. That is also a thing about Hannah, she would never be marked tardy to class, and if she was then it was because she was helping another teacher or student in the hallways.
         “Hahaha… just let her go, you have us now. She is a nerd and takes all the honors classes because she thinks she is better than us,” said Kelsey, “She left you hanging there and on your friendship ‘anniversary’ hahahaha.”
         Everyone in the group started to laugh as Kelsey said anniversary, because she was mocking Hannah. I joined in and said okay, now come on or we will be late to science.
         That night Hannah and I had our annual reunion for our friendship and we watched Redneck Zombies, the best movie that was ever made, it is a comedy yet a horror movie. It is the perfect movie for us because Hannah likes comedy and I like horror, we watch Redneck Zombies every friendship reunion because we think it symbolizes our friendship. When we were coming to the scary part, the doorbell rings and when I answer it I see the guy that I have liked for about three years now, his name is Landon Pine. He is a junior, so I do not think he will ask me out because of the age difference, but hey, you have to try.
         “Dannielle, who is that,” Hannah says as she runs to her room to get the money from her room, “is that Landon? The cute boy that you like?”
         Landon smiles and I get red in the face, I want to punch her so bad right now, how could she do that, I thought we were best friends. A best friend would never do that to her best friend. You know what I should do Monday, I should tell one of her cowboy friends that she wants to go out with one of them, I know the perfect guy, and she actually has a crush on this guy, Nathan Winterville. I don’t know why she likes him; he is this tall albino freak. Hahahaha…  She does not deserve him either. I am going to embarrass her so much on Monday its not even funny.
         When she hands me the money I give the money to Landon and then he says to me “Hey I have never noticed you before, do you want to go out sometime?”
“Um. Um....... yeah sure.” I almost fainted while saying this to him.
As I walk back in the house I hear Hannah laughs under her breath in the kitchen.
“Hannah, why the freak would you do that to me!” I yelled at her.
“He asked you out didn’t he!” she screamed back.
“Yeah but tell me why you did it, would you want me to go into school and ask Nathan out for you?!”
“No, but I just had a feeling he would ask you tonight.”
“Why would you ask him that, well why today?” I said as I started calming down.
“Because tonight is a special day, you know.” Hannah told me.
“Okay, but that does not mean you can just flat out ask someone to ask me out.”
“Okay, well I am sorry. I did not mean to.”
“It’s okay.” I said this even know it was not. The reason it is not is because I told Kelsey, Emalee, and Ally already about the situation. When Monday comes, I know they are going to go in and tell everyone especially Nathan, that Hannah likes him. There is no way of stopping them, but hey she deserves it.
As me and Hannah walk in Kelsey, Emalee, and Ally follow behind us, just waiting for the right time to do it. Hannah and Nathan start talking and then boom you hear “Nathan!!!!! Hannah really likes you!!!!!! She wants to be your girlfriend!!!!” shouted Ally.
Hannah starts to blush and then looks over at me, I could tell she wanted to cry, but I knew she wouldn’t because then it would ruin her reputation. When people started to stare and laugh she ran like a deer trying to get away from a hunter, towards the bathroom. I saw Courtney Sandler run in after her. I wanted to go check on her but; I did not want my friends to think that I was friends with her again. Later on I have a class with her so I will check on her then. The bell rings and she still has not come out yet. Nathan and the group already left for Vo-Tec and I am the only one standing by her locker. I feel so stupid standing here by myself; I guess I could go in and check on her now.
         “Hannah are you okay? I am really sorry about what just happened.” I said.
         “Why the freak would you tell them!? Why Dannielle? Why? Was it because of what happened Friday night? I hope it was not because I thought we were cool about it all.” Hannah says trying not to cry anymore.
         “I told them on Friday, but it was before we were okay-“
         “JUST LEAVE HER ALONE OKAY! YOU HAVE CAUSED ENOUGH DAMAGE TO HER ALREADY!” Courtney interrupted.
         “But Courtney I said I-“I tried to exclaim.
         “Dannielle just leave, alright I am tired of getting mad and then you treating me like crap again” Hannah replied.
         “But Hannah I really-“I tried to say but they both left me in there alone.
          “DANNIELLE, where have you been?” Emalee screamed down the hallway to get my attention.
         I turned around quickly, hoping to see Hannah saying that she was sorry too for what she did to me today, but instead I saw Emalee, Ally, and Kelsey.
         “Hey, after school you want to hang out?”  Ally asked.
         “Haha... Yeah, okay we can hang out, who all is going to be there?” I said in regret.
         “Ah just me, you, Emalee, and Kelsey, just all hanging out at my place.”
         “Okay, I guess we can do that then. After school, at your place right?”
         “Heck yes and we are going to get high in the sky! Hahaha” Ally started laughing 
         It never dawned on me that she actually meant that we were going to get high. It was the last period of day and I could not wait till I went to Ally’s house.
         We all met afterwards at the front of the school and then walked down to her house, we all were talking about what was going to happen, but I was still dazed about what happened with Hannah so I really was not paying attention. When we finally got to her house we walked in and I asked Ally where her parents were and then everyone started to laugh. She told me that we could not do what we were supposed to do if her parents were there.
“Ohhh…” I said as we all walked into the garage.
Ally then got the crack out of her secret hiding place. She said “Here it is!!!! Now let the party start!”
“Uhh... are you sure we are allowed to do this... I mean in here and-“I said nervously.
“Ohh Dannielle you are such a party pooper! Just come on and have some fun, I think Hannah has poisoned your mind!” Kelsey shouted.
“Okay, well I guess I can try it.”
“Yeah we got another person in the group!” Emalee said kind of laughing and seriously.
We all got high for at least an hour and then we went to our own houses. When I got home my brother and Hannah were waiting on the front steps. It was 6:00 PM and it was just starting to get dark. When my brother saw me, he just walked into the house. As I walked closer Hannah saw that my eyes were red and that I was acting weird. She ran up to me and asked me what happened.
“You’re a pretty unicorn, Oh look a pretty flower!” I told her.
“Dannielle how could you do this?” Hannah exclaimed.
“Pretty unicorn and flowers dance in my head!”
“I better take you to my house until you get better, I don’t need you getting in trouble with your mom.”
“But pretty unicorns are my friends!”
“I know. Uh... I got it. Dannielle there are pretty unicorns at my house! You want to come over to see them?”
“Yes yes yes yes!!!!! I do I do I do!!” Dannielle shouted.
“Mrs. Penzdot, Dannielle is sleeping over at my house tonight.” Hannah shouted back into the house.
“Okay, you girls have fun now!” My mom yelled from the kitchen.
As we walked to Hannah’s house all I could remember was wondering in the street and almost getting hit by cars, but Hannah would be right there to pull me back to the sidewalk. When we went into her house, I was sent straight to her room and Hannah went to go tell her mom that I was staying over.
“Okay, you are going to eat some food and stay in this room, you hear?” Hannah said before she shut the door to go get me some food. When she came back up she told me that she was sorry and she was just letting her feelings talk for her.
I started to eat the food and felt a little better, and then Hannah’s mom pops in the doorway just to see how we were doing. I did not talk because I was so hungry that I was shoveling the food into my mouth. Hannah told her mom that we were fine and that she did not have to worry about anything.
After I was done eating, Hannah told me to take a shower and then we would go to bed because it was already past ten o’clock. We both got a shower at the same time, I got mine in the guest bathroom and Hannah got hers in her parent’s bathroom. I fell asleep waiting for her. When she came in, she made sure to be extra quiet because she did not want to wake me. But then I start to hear her cell phone ring, she answered it and what would you know, it was my mom. I heard all of the conversation because Hannah went into the bathroom and had put it on speaker to hear my mom clearer. My mom was worried about me and all Hannah kept on saying was that I was okay. A question that really struck my mind was when my mom asked Hannah if I was doing drugs. Hannah took a couple second to reply to this and then eventually replied “No I was not doing drugs.” I was surprised that Hannah would lie for me even after what I did to her. Then they hung up and Hannah came in to go to bed.
The next day at school Hannah held her head high and still walked with me. She never once did anything or said anything to me until we got to her locker.
“So how did Sunday go, with your date with Landon?” She asked.
“Uh… not so good, I found out he was a complete jerk.” I replied.
“Oh I am sorry, for what I did and for what happened.”
“It is okay, it really wasn’t your fault. And Hannah can I ask you something?”
“Yeah, sure anything.”
“What happened last night?”
“Um… Well you were high and I took you to my house and then I took care of you so you would not get in trouble.”
“Are you serious? Did that actually happen?”
“Haha…. Yeah it did, but hey that is the past let’s put it behind us.” She told me.
Next thing I know I get a slap on the back from Ally telling me that last night was hilarious and fun! Then Emalee and Kelsey start laughing.
“Hey Dannielle, come with us to Emalee’s locker, then we are going to hang out again after school, you in?” Kelsey said.
I looked at Hannah and could tell she was getting mad, and she took me in when I was hurt. Hannah has been there for me through thick and thin.
“Uh… guys I think I am going to stick with Hannah.” I replied.
A huge smile spread across her face when I said this.
“Haha... so are you going to turn into nerd just like she is?” Emalee shouted down the hallway.
“Yeah I guess I will be a nerd, but at least I don’t have to get high to have fun.” I screamed back.
Everyone’s heads turned towards Emalee, Kelsey, and Ally. Everyone was shocked to hear that they did crack and got high off of it. Most of the people started whispering about them as they walked away.
“Wow, you are brave. I cannot believe you just did that.” Hannah told me as she shut her locker.
“Do what?” I asked.
“Stand up to them like that, I can’t believe you would do that just to be with me.”
“Aw… Hannah I really do love you, in the non homo way though!”
We both started to laugh and then I asked her if the honors classes were hard.
“They really aren’t that hard, they are challenging, but they mostly just require you to focus and pay attention. Why?”
“Because I am thinking about signing up for them next year so we can be closer and we can be together again.”
There was a smile that was on her face when we walked to her English class, and it was still there when I met her outside of the room.
