A girl realizes she has become a cliche.
“Are you a student here?” the cashier asks me.
I pause for a moment. “Yes.” I pull out my student card which for the last 5 days has functioned as my coke cutter. It sat on Divine’s single of “You Think You’re a Man” for 5 days and arranged and rearranged line after line of cocaine.
I hand her the card, smiling inside.
She swipes the card and I slip it calmly back into my wallet.
Walking outside with Ulysses under my arm, I smile faintly knowing that I’ve arrived at a time in my life that I always knew was coming. The point when I start carrying little secrets that sometimes makes me smile.
