I used to tell the children what to do and how to act,
and looked at them so solemnly, not using any tact!
"Clean your room, pick up your clothes, do MORE!"
It seemed like I was always looking, keeping score.
Now it is years later, they've all grown up and gone,
and I didn't hear the music, or listen to their song.
It seems that I had forgotten, when I tried to teach,
a most important lesson is practice what you preach.
If I had been wiser where motherhood's concerned,
by now I could relax and enjoy every hug I earned.
The true happiness is somewhere just out of reach
when one forgets to practice love, still they preach..
My children have turned out all right in spite of me,
and they know what makes me tick, I can plainly see.
I'll leave the preaching to the preachers from now on,
all too soon the grandchildren will be grown and gone.
