Sad and depressed, he was sitting on a park bench...
I was sitting quietly on the park bench, my head tilted backwards, eyes closed, the rain falling and tricking down my neck. Everything was over; my exams, my school and… I smiled.

My best friend Jake was supposed to come. He had asked me to wait for him. I smiled again. The rain was pouring and I could feel every drop on my face. Suddenly the rain stopped hitting my face. I opened my eyes and saw that an umbrella was right above my head. I straightened myself and turned my head only to come face to face with the most beautiful pair of eyes I had ever seen and the most breathtaking smile.

“You shouldn’t get wet you know, this rain can make you fall sick.”

I was dazed and then I almost spat out, “Who the hell are you and why on earth are you holding an umbrella…” I paused as I realized that she had already given me a reason beforehand. She smiled again.

“Look, you should go home. Let me be.” I said giving up. Her smile had hit me, it had hit me hard.

“Sorry, can’t do that.” She adjusted the green scarf around her neck. She was slim and a brunette. “So what do you suggest while we sit here.” I opened my mouth to say something but she spoke again, “And as for who I am, let’s just say that I’m a guardian angel.”, and broke into a smile.

Her smile was so beautiful that I decided that if she smiled again, I would go crazy. Man would I go crazy. “Please tell me who you are. Please” I begged her. Still holding the umbrella firmly over her head, she replied, “Be patient okay. It’s a virtue you know.”

No please, not that smile again, I was literally beseeching in my mind.

“Fine, I won’t smile. God, guys are so…” saying so she rolled her eyes. She was driving me crazy. There was just something about her. Where was Jake? If I stayed here any longer then I’d fall in love and after …”

“What happened Chris?” she asked with a worried expression. That hit me. It hit me crazy. No one had called me Chris in spite of the numerous times I had asked them to and when she did, it hit me hard. Cupid was doing it again, the same thing that he had done two years back. I put up the most serious expression I could and turned to face her.

“Listen you should, aww no please, please don’t smile.”

She muttered a muffled sorry before breaking into a giggle. But this time even I smiled.

“Finally, thank heavens you smiled. Seriously you’ve got such a nice smile. You should smile more often.” This was crazy, she was driving me crazy. I looked at her more closely. She had warm brown eyes which had a tiny hint of kohl in it.She was wearing a long flowing white skirt and a simple white blouse. Her scarf was a contrast but somehow, on her everything looked perfect. Her eyes lit up whenever she smiled. I didn’t even know who she was but…I don’t know, there was something so serene about her. She suddenly stood up, breaking my thoughts.

“Hey where are you going?” I asked her. Was she going to leave now? I didn’t even know her name. She did not look at me and simply pointed the other way. I followed her finger and saw that Jake was coming towards us. I took and step forward and then as I turned around, I found that she had gone; as mysteriously as she had arrived. Jake and I jogged back to his car.

“Well?” asked Jake. I was surprised at first but then realized what he was hinting at.

“I don’t know her Jake, never seen her before.”

“Yeah right, she was holding an umbrella over your head man. You were laughing with her.” His words reminded me of her smile; her infectious but beautiful smile. I looked out of the window of the car. It had stopped raining. As the car went on its way, I wondered if I would her again, see her smile; a heavenly smile from the lips of an angel, the lips of my guardian angel…
