i meet a bum and he warns me about a crazed killer in new york. will i leave like he said?
So there I was. Just sitting there minding my own bissness when out of no where, out popped this man. He looked old, scared, and homeless. He smelt awful, like he had just gotten done bathing in a dumpster.
"Excuse me, miss. This will only take just a minute of your time." he said moving towards me.
"Im, of course, sir. What is it?" i asked moing backwards so he wouldn't get closer.
"Leave this town. It's not safe for girls like you." he said lowering his voice and looking me directly in the eye. "This town has a murderer. But he only goes after girls. Tell me dear, do you live here? Or anywhere close?" he asked.
"Well, no. I'm only vistiting. I'm going to buy a place here, with some of my friends." I said looking around feeling uncomforable.
"But you live around here?" he asked very serious.
"Yes. I'm staying just a few blocks over there." I said pointing off to the right.
"Then leave, miss. I'm not trying to scare you, or make you never want to come back here. But, it's not safe." he said putting his hand on my shoulder.
"Sir, it's New York. I'm sure that this city is crawling with murderers and rapists and anything eles that you can think of. I'll be fine." I said sliding his hand off of me and smiling.
"No, no, no, miss. All the young girls have left. He's only in this part of town. He only kills on theese few blocks. No where eles. Well, for all we know he could be watching you and me right now. He could come after me, just for telling you about him! I'm taking a risk, miss." he said. "So, please, miss, leave this city."
"But, sir. I'm just starting my carreer. I can't just up and leave." I said shaking my head. "I'm sorry," i said not really sure why I was apologizing. "I just can't leave." he started to shake his head, looking glum and worried.
"You'll learn. You'll die, and make your family suffer for your own selfish reasons!" he said pointing his finger at me. "You'll learn alright." he said walking away.
"That crazy old man." I said to myself when he was out of sight. I started to walk the steet so that I made it back to Connies house. I told her the story of the crazy bum.
"Well, you know that he could be telling the truth. I mean, after all if you think about it, bums live on the street so that means that they know what's going on for the most part. So he could be right, or he could be, like you said, crazy." I sat there for a minute. What she just said wrapping itself around my brain so that I could comprehend what was going on, what could have possibly been going on. I tried to think of my childhood when my grandpa would tell me when someone was telling the truth and when they were lying. But, I couldn't think of what the lesson was fully about. What had he said all those years ago? What had he been talking about that I drained out of my brain. I only remembered short flashes of what was going on.
We were sitting at the picnic table at the park.
"Look over there," he said pointing at a couple. "What are they doing?"
"Well, they're sitting there with their baby, enjoying the park. They look like they're having a good time for the most park. Other than, the man and woman aren't sitting next to eachother. I wonder why." I said, looking at them trying to think of why they could possibly be that far apart.
"It looks to me that they are that far apart because they aren't happy together, or they're fighting." he said. I nodded, now I could see why they weren't close.
That was it. That was the memory, but what could that do. Why did her brain want her to remember that? That one lesson other that all of the other more important ones?
"Body judgement!" I said jumping up.
"What?" asked Connie.
"Body judgment. The man wasn't lying. We need to leave." I said going to my room. I pulled my suit case out from the closet and began to shove my clothes and belongings that were most important to me. I was moving around so fast that I kept on seeing something outside my window, but when I would look, nothing would be there.
"Connie! Are you almost packed?" I shouted making sure that she could hear me.
"No! I'm staying!" she yelled back. I stopped and dropped the last pile of stuff into my bag. I stormed out of my room and into her room.
"What do you mean, you're not leaving?" I demanded.
"I mean, that I'm not leaving my home. I can't there's no reason to." she said. "But, you can if you want." she added.
"Fine. I'll let you die." I said. I stomped back into my room. The window was open. I didn't remember it being open that much. Oh, well. I thought. So I went and closed it not thinking of it.
"Okay. Well, I'm not leaving if you don't." I said after I unpacked everything.
"Are you sure?" Connie asked uncertin.
"Yes. I'm positive." I said. We left the house and went to dinner. While we were walking I looked back up at my room, then down at the ally.
"Stop." I whispered pulling Connies arm. She stopped and looked down the ally with me. She didn't see anything, but I did. There was something wrong. The dumpster was under the fire escape ladder, and the lid was closed. Maybe someone closed it. Then I looked again, it was under my fire escape ladder, it lead up to my room. My light was on, and I was sure I turned it off. I was positive this time. Then I saw a shaddow. It was moving around in my room, like someone was looking for something in there.
"Come on!" I said pulling Connie behind me running down the street. I glanced back, and my window was open and someone was leaning out, watching us run away. Now, this scared me. Was that bum right? I think he was.
"We can't go back." I said to Connie when we were in the middle of Times Square.
"It's our home. We have to. All of our stuff is there. And, whats going on? Why'd we have to run over here?" She demanded sounding annoyed.
"I know that it's our home, but someone was in it. I saw them in my room, their shaddow and my light was on. I never leave my light on. And the dumpster must have been a boost up so that they could climb up to the fire excape to get into my room. But, he didn't know that we were leaving to dinner. He must have seen me unpacking and was going to attack one of us, if not both, when we go to bed tonight. So we're not going back." I said.
