Some wounds just can not heal.
Trevor pressed play on the answering machine. A long hissing ensued, and the message played.

“Hi Trevor. This is your mother. I’d like to stop by tonight if you don’t mind. I need to talk to you. Call me back. I’ll stop by around six.” The machine clicked and the tape automatically rewound.

Trevor poured a bourbon and eased into his recliner. The stillness of the apartment bore upon him. He sipped the drink and stared at the blank television screen. His thoughts wandered to his girlfriend. “Perhaps you’re right, Michelle,” He said aloud, “Maybe I am broken.” The sting of the bourbon bit his throat, and he clenched his teeth at the sensation. He threw back the last drop of alcohol, and poured another. He shook his head and sighed.

“You’ve cost me another girlfriend mother.” He raised his glass as if toasting to the grim fact. “I’ll have to hand it to you.” He swilled down the drink, and grabbed the bottle.

“I’m a drunk just like you. The quack said I have ‘deep rooted socialization issues’. Hell, I could have told him that when I first walked into his office. Psycho-babble nonsense. I’m just screwed up.”

He walked in front of the full length mirror hanging on the back of the closet door. “You’re a monster.” He pointed to his reflection. “You aren’t worth saving.”

Echoes of past memories bubbled to his consciousness. “Stop it Mother! You’re hurting me. I can’t breathe. Don’t cover my mouth. I can’t breathe! Don’t hit me,” Trevor yelled and trembled. “What did I do wrong? No. Don’t lock me in there again.” Tears poured from his eyes.

He pointed at his image again. “Worthless boy. Even after she’s dead for twelve years, you can’t erase her last message.”
