Another poem about our trying politically context in South Africa.
Leaders of my beloved country,
Where is this promised land
That you pledged to create?
Where is all of this change
That you swore to make?

You sweet-talked us all
But have neglected to
Honour your word.

You leave us, the young,
The uninfluential,
No choice
But to speak up and speak out
Of all the things that aren’t right.

You sweet-talked us all
But have neglected to
Honour your word.

Rather than fix the potholes
Of our nation, you build arenas
To display our progress.
But they are a woollen sheet
Pulled up to the eyes of the world.

You sweet-talked us all
But have neglected to
Honour your word.

But the world is not blind
And not long from now
It will rear its head
To analyse this land,
Then will we be judged.

You sweet-talked us all
But have neglected to
Honour your word.

Instead of seeing to the little people,
You opt to helping your cronies.
If you wish to grow trees
First look at the state of the grass,
It’s usually a good clue.

You sweet-talked us all
But have neglected to
Honour your word.

Yes, we are now a free country
But we are not yet a fair country.
Fairness and Justice seem to be
Moving further away at a great rate
And soon we will forget their taste.

You sweet-talked us all
But have neglected to
Honour your word.

We’re tired of your soporific sheep-speech;
It’s time to promote future shepherds
That will lead the heard by the hand.
Without a legitimate, competent heir
The throne will be thrown to the wolves.

You sweet-talked us all
But have neglected to
Honour your word.

Relinquish your dire habits of preaching
Without practice, and teaching
Us that entitlement is hereditary,
When in fact it, much like respect,
It should actually be
Worked for and earned by each progeny.

You sweet-talked us all
But have neglected to
Honour your word.

So, come right and turn left,
Take us forward.
If you don’t, and instead leave
Us in a state of inertia
Then those that come after you
Will have liberal reacting to do.

You have heard our cries
Now, please
Honour your word.
