Victory of Revenge
Word Count: 359

My father and I were at my husband’s grave; he died from his wound he received at the battle of Valverde the previous month. We were just leaving the cemetery when the sound of fifes and drums could be heard in the distance. I was hoping to see our soldiers marching to fight the enemy. A dog that was sleeping in the street jumped and ran into the cemetery to find a quiet place to continue its sleep. My father motioned for us to head home but down the road a flag was just coming over the hill and to my horror it was the enemies flag. My heart sunk as the army came into view they were being led by an older man on a horse; he was balding and to me seemed out of place. My heart filled with hatred at the soldiers because of them my child will be raised without a father. As the soldiers passed some of them were laughing while others smiled. One man caught my eye he nodded at me he seemed annoyed about being in the army. My father pulled me closer to the entrance of the cemetery just in case a soldier tried to grab me. As the hated Americans were out of sight my father started to walk and I followed. We made it to our home when the sound of canon fire started. I prayed that our soldiers were safe and the enemy killed. It would be the proper thing to happen to them after they took my husband. The sounds lasted all through the day then the canons became silent before twilight. Not too long after the canons ceased we heard frantic noises from the street; I looked out and saw some of the Americans running away most of them were bloody. The dog from before was running after them barking and nipping at the soldiers. The next day we heard the sound of marching soldiers and to my delight it was our army. The Mexican flag waved in the morning sun as the soldiers marched and the town was out cheering the soldiers on to victory.
