IF I HAD KNOWN

If I had known before what I know today,
I'd have reached out with words to say
how much you meant to me and then
I'd try to make your world bright again.

We take for granted that we will go on
and never hear the ending of our song.
Yet life is full of surprises, I've no doubt
that I will never know what it's all about.

I've heard the tolling of the church bell
when goodbyes are said - a last farewell
to family and friends that I have held dear.
Their reasons for leaving are quite unclear.

If I had known that this would be the end,
that you were heading around the bend,
I'd have held you close and said 'so long'
I listened to the singer, not the sad song.

Wrapped tightly in lives of our very own
we do not see the pain of being alone.
All part of the celestial melody played,
ignoring a part in life that you had made.

One day you find that the song is done,
thinking you'll not be missed by anyone.
Then we realize the song is ours alone
and someone says "If I had known...."

Too late for gentle words of hope and love,
and the only recourse is from Him above
who will come and claim a weary heart
Yes, He has known - right from the start.
