I am searching for you my soul:
beneath rocks smoothed by ocean waves;
above cold crystals pressurized by the earth’s age.
I outline your body in our coloring book,
but the images stay two dimensional;
until you are here to color them in,
with paints made from berries and flower petals
crushed with rocks in hidden caves.
As the children play in their games of hide and seek,
you peek at me beyond the mango trees.
Shadows dance upon your lips as your seductive eyes
tempt me to join in their game.
I call to you in the abandoned woods:
“A body cannot be warm without a soul!”
All I hear is your echoing laughter,
the cold wind and snow gnawing into my bones.
Standing in the turquoise doorway,
I whistle one last song of spring flowers
as the howling wolves circle closer.
Trapped within the power lines of industrialized cities
I feel the birds sing back:
“And a soul is bolted to you forever.”
