A contest entry poem about a surprising (metaphorical) chameleon.
I told you lies, I’m a chameleon,

Always changing colour, always changing form,

One day I’m a colourful parrot, chatting away happily,

The next I’m a camouflaged cheetah, deceiving and cheating,

Never the same, one day and the next,

Never the same, now I’m a puppy dog,

I look to you with orb-like, droopy eyes, will you forgive me?

I told you lies, I’m a chameleon.

One time I asked for forgiveness, but I’m always changing,

Now I’m a cat, in a world of my own,

I live for myself, I forget all my comrades,

Never should you believe a deceitful liar,

Never should you believe a chameleon,

Now I’m a rooster, I’ll tell the world our secrets,

Don’t expect my loyalty, don’t trust my shrieking cry,

Because I told you lies, I’m a chameleon.

One time I threatened to tell everyone, but I’ve changed now,

I’m a penguin, huddled up and silent,

Never would I beg like a dog, sulk like a cat,

Never would I shout out like a rooster,

But never would I stay the same, for I’m a chameleon,

Now I’m a duckling, snugly and peaceful,

But I now honk like a goose, for I’m always changing,

Because I told you lies, I’m a chameleon.

One time I snuggled by your side, a gosling, a duckling,

But now I am different, now I am a person,

I want to be like you, to live like you, to be with you,

I think of you like you think of your betters,

For you are my lover, and I’m a chameleon,

Though I promise myself to you truly and faithfully,

Remember my tricks, and that I’m a surprise,

Because I told you lies – I’m a chameleon.
