A long, rant-like poem |
When you’re sitting there above the head you were born in And you’re thinking a lot about love that was torn in two When your signals get crossed and life’s got you baffled And you’re just trying to get your own tower in the castle And your mind is so sick and you don’t know the reason And you just want it to be some other season And your curtains of iron become cages of steel And your deepest dark terror becomes the way that you feel And you climb to the roof where you fall from the throne Where the popcorn lady is holding the phone Where your triangle’s scream and your rectangles bleed And the only plant growin’ comes from a bubble gum seed And the a river of pennies is the only thing a-flowin’ And a tornado of 10’s is the only thing a-blowin’ And the pumpkin heads are the only things a-rollin’ And the picket lines are constantly a-tollin’ And your body gets chilled by the old winter's breeze And your face in that breeze, your face it does freeze And you can only keep one hand in your pocket at a time And you can only think of one word to fit each rhyme And your asking these questions like ‘‘What have I done?’’ ‘‘What is my name, where did I come from?’’ And you can’t remember why you’re here Because here is there, and it it is truly everywhere And you can’t escape Cruelty, who hides under a hood ‘‘Does no one here stand for justice and good?’’ And you read through the pages of some cyanide book But you give up in anger after all the time that it took And when you got all these memories but nothing to miss And you say to yourself ‘‘No one told me it would be like this’’ And just as your skeleton is gonna jump from your skin Your psychological immune system kicks in And you say ‘‘Oh my God, I don’t need her anymore’’ And ‘‘Oh my God, I can move on now’’ But it’s harder to do than it was to say Just as it’s harder to say than it was to think it So as a last resort you decide to sink it To the bottom of the sea, deep in some bay Where it lays in a treasure chest to this day You find yourself in some land that you don’t understand Where the lawyer paints his face and the clown wears a suit Where the musician shuffles cards and the gambler plays the flute Where the drinks taste like sand and the food reeks of wine And every time you breath you’re given a fine In the ring leader’s courtroom they give you a sentence Which has to be approved by the chieftain in reverence He gives you an option, some dead to do You must go back to Earth and deliver some news He says, ‘‘Take this and deliver it once You can give it to the one he hunts’’ (But it doesn’t really matter cos’ they’re all just doin’ the stunts) So you go back and see all the crows on the lawn Each and every one just a pawn that doesn’t know right from wrong And at the sight of the scene you’re happily sold And you recite the verse that the chief had told: ‘‘I have been to forest and seen subtle mayhem Beauty exists all around But you have to be willing to look for it It’s something that needs to be found Open your hearts and free you minds Logic is a meaningless noun Together we can get it together Quit dragging your souls on the ground The shadows are dark but they never lie I can see what’s around the bend They warn of a hidden fate And I can tell that we’re reaching the end. You’re looking for truth in your newspapers And you’re lookin’ for truth in your work And you’re lookin’ for truth in your bibles And you’re diggin’ for truth in the dirt And your lookin’ for truth in your losses And your lookin’ for truth in your gains And your lookin’ for truth in your health And your lookin’ for truth in your pains And your lookin’ for truth in the lunies And your lookin’ for truth in the sane And your lookin’ for truth in the clouds... But it’s lost in a misty rain So take your chance before it’s too late Make use of that stubborn brain Use what you’ve got and not what you had While the blood still runs through your veins’’ And as those last words are leaving your lips The woman in front of you puts her hands on her hips Then she grabs your face and kisses you sloppy But that ain’t even enough to stop the Thoughts that scourge your innocent brain So when you can’t find anything to ease the pain And you don’t own an umbrella that can cease the rain And when you put on your best coat to find 33 holes in it And then you realize your best friend has stolen it And when all that’s left is for you to get sworn in You can always go back to head you were born in Anytime you like.
